Wrenn: Perdue bouncing around

Carter Wrenn likens Gov. Beverly Perdue to an "errant pin-ball."

In a post on his Talking About Politics blog, the Republican political consultant ponders why Perdue's polling numbers are so bad while President Barack Obama continues to fare okay.

Beverly Perdue was a capable State Senator serving under Marc Basnight, a solid Lieutenant Governor (still serving under Basnight), but now that she's running the show she's suddenly darting in a dozen different directions: First ordering spending cuts, then demanding tax increases, then saying it didn't matter which taxes the legislature raised, then telling legislators they'd raised the wrong ones.

She's bounced around like an errant pin-ball until her house of political cards has collapsed, and for the first time in memory the Governor of North Carolina is less popular than a visit from an IRS agent.

Wrenn says Perdue's problems create problems for Democratic lawmakers in next year's election. He says they need to either drop Perdue "like a hot potato" or find away to pump her back up.

Re: Wrenn: Perdue bouncing around

"At least she only has one way to go - up!"

This is a true statement if applied to the "service revenue base" that Bev discovered during the budget debate.

In recent interviews, Bev has been clear that new taxes on services are necessary to maintain "core" state programs.

Absent economic growth, taxes will most assuredly have to "go up" again in the not too distant future.

Re: Wrenn: Perdue bouncing around

25% approval leaves a downward cushion of .... 25%. I think she can DO IT!

Re: Wrenn: Perdue bouncing around

At least she only has one way to go - up! Hopefully.

Re: Wrenn: Perdue bouncing around

The problem here is that from the start of her administration Ms Perdue has studiously avoided taking responsibility for any action deemed damaging to her political base.

By trying so hard to avoid creating the perception that she is responsible for higher taxes and reduced spending on cherished left-wing programs, while tacitly supporting such actions, Perdue has destroyed her credibility.

Re: Wrenn: Perdue bouncing around

Carter Wrenn is sadly right on the mark on this one.

Is it too late to get Easley back? At least he didn't keep contradicting himself. Of course he never said anything but that is better than saying something different each time you open your mouth.

This is getting to be a remake of "Legally Blond" but without the happy ending.

Re: Wrenn: Perdue bouncing around

Basnight and Rand put "Baby Dumpling" in the mansion .... and she stays there at their say-so.

If they decide she's more trouble than she's worth, she'll be evicted figuratively if not literally.

Re: Wrenn: Perdue bouncing around

Threatening to veto the budget bill if they didn't increase taxes by $200 million is going to be a tough one to live down. The only way she wriggles free is if the state economy is so disastrous over the next couple of years, that her actions pale in comparison.

Bev who?

Thought her spokesperson was the gov

Perdue: New PinBall Wizard

Brilliantly stated, Carter Wrenn. The flip flops that she had during the campaign were just a precursor of her actions as Governor.

Re: Wrenn: Perdue bouncing around

Bev is more interested in letting everyone know she is the big boss than anything else. Maybe she should spend less time threatening to fire every state employee that makes a mistake and take a look at herself. She's made quite a few mistakes since taking office, starting with the Bill Harrison fiasco. Is it too much to ask of our elected officials to actually follow the state constitution?
