Why did Wright get the longest sentence?

Thomas WrightLaura Leslie wonders why Thomas Wright got the longest sentence.

In a post on Hunter's Tavern, the WUNC reporter points out that the former state representative got the longest sentence of any of the three legislators who've been convicted of corruption in the last two years.

Former state Rep. Michael Decker got $50,000 and a job for his son for selling his vote, and in exchange he got 48 months in a federal prison.

Former House Speaker Jim Black got a $500,000 loan and admitted buying Decker's vote, and in exchange he got a $1 million fine and 63 months in a federal prison.

Wright got a $150,000 mortgage under false pretenses and pocketed $7,400 in charitable donations and he got 70 months in state prison.

"So how is it that fraud in the service of buying a house nets you more prison time than fraud in the service of buying the House?" she writes on the blog. "Seriously — is it really more heinous to deceive a banker than a voter?"

On the other hand, she notes that Wright failed to apologize at all for his behavior, unlike Black and Decker.

Re: Why did Wright get the longest sentence?

the past 4 decades of Rawleigh RULE by CORRUOPT democrackkks has RUINED our STATE. 99% of the clueless masses dont understand whats been foisted upon them by these VILE people...starting with Jim Hunt.

Re: Why did Wright get the longest sentence?

iam not surprised...as i have previously written something still stinks in raleigh ... oh yes black is out ...decker and now wright... but you know i still cant forget how the legislature voted for the optometrist pay-off bill that would have forced the poor parents of nc to acquire unnecessary expense. no one oppose him really except a few.and now i see that the person that knowingly wrote wright a letter to perpetuate fraud was put on administrative leave...w/pay and now he has sudddenly been put back in another high profile position...i know wright cried race ...but it makes you wonder. i was appalled at his arrogance of not resigning but look at how long jim black stayed and continued his mess. this is all a charade they will keep right on manipulating mispending our hard earned money
and yes they will hang out a few to dangling as they say they are claening up raleigh but you know i dont believe it. something still stinks in raleigh.

Re: Why did Wright get the longest sentence?

Not to mention that he used money that was supposed to be about helping out the downtrodden to help himself. And that his defense was so scornful of the process: "I am waiting for my bank statements" !!!! He means, of course, the bank statements that he has had well over a year to request. This is is tantamount to slouching in front of the judge with your shirttail out and saying "Oh, I forgot to look at my speedometer." Not exactly an attitude of concern, let alone remorse.

He admitted on the stand that he used his position as a state representative to obtain a letter that was itself a fraud, yet refused to acknowledge there was anything wrong with that. Instead, he made multiple statements to the effect that he was a victim of others' evil-doing, that this matter of his breaking the law was irrelevant, and that it was only brought to light because he had supported a GOP candidate in New Hanover County. It's an insultingly stupid assertion that the Democrats went after Thomas Wright to punish him, when obviously the addition of Wright to the list of Democrats who have gone down in flames only hands the GOP an issue in May and in the general election.

Most of all, the crying of "ya'll are racists!" as a substitute for explaining his ongoing flauting of the laws of the state that he SWORE to uphold should offend the hell out of everyone -- especially those who care about racism.

Re: Why did Wright get the longest sentence?

Didn't Black and Decker enter guilty pleas?

Wright pleaded not guilty and had a trial.

While you might compare their offenses, you can't deny that their different punishments are based in some measure on the difference in their pleas.

Glad you picked this up
