What Dole said about Bowles' loan

Six years ago, Republican Elizabeth Dole reacted with alarm when Democratic Senate opponent Erskine Bowles, a wealthy former investment banker, dug deep into his own pocket.

"TAKE A LOOK AT THIS," she wrote in an e-mail to thousands of supporters in October 2002. "My opponent loaned nearly $3 million of his personal wealth to his own campaign We expect him to use even more of his personal wealth to finance his negative television and radio ads."

"I do not have that kind of personal wealth," Dole wrote. "So, to continue setting the record straight I must be able to count on the generous support of friends like you."

Dole's electronic plea raised thousands of dollars for her campaign, Jim Morrill reports.

Now Dole, running for a second term against Democrat Kay Hagan, has loaned her own campaign $3 million.

According to an analysis of disclosure forms by the Center for Responsive Politics, only six senators are wealthier than Dole. She had holdings valued at between $18.5 million and $69.2 million.

In 2002, she reported family assets of up to $23 million.

Guess so. A paltry $3million when you have $60m plus now

And all those royalties from Pepsi ads with Brittany Spears.

Stay classy Doles. Stay classy.

Re: What Dole said about Bowles' loan

"Dole's more than tripled their wealth since 2002?

I had no idea Viagra paid that much for spokes-seniors."

Liddy and her hubby earned a big chunk of their "starter money" from speaking engagements, which they turn around and invest in stocks & bonds. But they don't just randomly buy and sell them. Why do you think Liddy wormed her way onto these committees?

* Subcommittee on Financial Institutions
* Subcommittee on Housing, Transportation, and Community Development
* Subcommittee on International Trade and Finance

You gotta know when to hold 'em and when to cash 'em in. I bet she burned up some cell phone minutes after (or during) committee hearings. Look at this sell-off from last year, and you'll see why loaning yourself a paltry 3 million is no problem:

Re: What Dole said about Bowles' loan

I had forgotten about Bowles and his tangled web between Washington and the banks. Now we have Hagan and her tangled web. Plus she's Lawton Chiles niece. Personally, I like Elizabeth Dole's lady-like manner. I think she could have done more for this state the last 6 years, but there is no way that I could vote for Hagan.

She's from the same ole, same ole eastern North Carolina cabal of good ole boys that have run this state into the ground.

Re: What Dole said about Bowles' loan

Nothing surprises me about politicians whose first goal is always to get elected. After all McCain is using many of the people who savaged him here in SC in 2000 as a reckless philandered with an illegitmate child to run his campaign this year.
