Under the Dome

What Art Pope's money paid for

The left-leaning Institute for Southern Studies has released a post-election anaylsis disecting the impact of the more than $1.3 million spent by Art Pope and members of his family boosting GOP candidates for the state legislature.

According to the group's analysis of state and federal campaign records, three independent groups backed by Art Pope — Americans for Prosperity, Civitas Action and Real Jobs NC — poured $1.1 million into 21 state legislative races targeted by Republicans. Art Pope and his family members injected another $232,000 into those races, for a total of over $1.3 million spent on the targeted state contests.

Together, the three groups linked to Pope focused their resources on 21 state contests that were a top priority for Republicans. Some Democrats were targeted by just one of three outside advocacy groups; 12 were attacked by two or more. Five unlucky Democrats were barraged by attacks from all three.

Republicans won 18 of the 21 races in districts targeted by the spending. Democrats decisively won just one contest; in two others — senate districts 44 and 45 — Democrats are clinging to leads of less than 100 votes.

Real Enemies?

What an interesting combination of remarks!   Notice we did not identify any remark as fact.   You'd better hurry up and work your wiles for those folks described by George H.W. Bush as "Brownies" are moving rapidly to become the majority of us "Americans" not next century, but soooooon!   So we'd better hang on for soon we'll be a minority!   Do us all a favor and stop denying the fact that we are living in an urban society that is only going to get larger and government will respond by becoming more controlling which is a normal result of increases in population.   Unless you can invent a plague or start a war there is no way to return to a frontier of independent citizens.    So stop misleading our fellow citizens, stop misleading yourself and stop throwing away your money for changes that will have if anything only a short life.

It's only fair...

A few years ago we heard what Soros paid for, now Pope has his day in the sun.

and while your at it

was Elaine Marshall required to report as a campaign contribution this papers on going and undying relationship and the " Lets all fall in love with Elaine Campaign ". In true soap opera form it was sickening by spring. ( but thanks N$O for overriding the Big D machine and bumping that pretty boy lawyer to the curb) blossomed during the summer and by fall formally announce the the relationship with a glowing endorsement by fall. Ahhh young love, its such a beautiful thing.....

but all that glowing free coverage ... is that a contribution ?

It DOES sound like a case of

It DOES sound like a case of sour grapes, the whine of which will not mellow in time.

Leveling the playing field seems to be the consensus, where is the impartiality? Replacing the monopoly of news organizations with free speech on the Internet is a silver lining against the backdrop of the rape and pillage of the American Economy. Why must we squabble when the real enemies are federal deficit spending and multinational corporations, creating an enormous wealth disparity. What will be the modern equivalent of the French Revolution, a second American one? Or will restraint rule the day when there isn't any food on the table, nor a roof to cover one's head? How long will the people continue to believe in a federal government that treats it's own citizens as terrorists?

Just leveling the field...

Thank you, Art. You helped balance out the unions: teacher, government and otherwise! Not to mention the liberal millionaires. This reminds me of Hunt. He outspent his opponents 3 to 1 until Jesse outspent him by a couple of hundred thousand in a multimillion dollar race for US Senate. Wah, wah, wah....

Error

You mean HOUSE districts 44 and 45 - the Parfitt and Glazier seats.

Dome, don't get distracted by the peanut gallery

As you well know, the Fletcher Foundation does not engage in electioneering as does Pope's machine, where "lie and buy" has become a new North Carolina art form.  You are right to focus on his purchasing power; it is the most dangerous thing to happen in my lifetime.

And as to Democratic elected officials using money they've raised, well, the operative word is "elected."  Despite Rob Christensen's fawning, Art Pope is not an elected official in North Carolina, nor is his paid mouthpiece John Hood.  They are simply to the manor born, well accustomed to buying whatever they want.

And in this case, Art Pope has just bought himself a brand new General Assembly, hook, line and sinker.  Next stop:  the North Carolina Supreme Court.

Campaign funding

And while you're at it, how about reporting how much Marc Basnight put in to either the Democratic Party and/or individual campaigns.  The use of unlimited contributions to parties by the likes of the Democratic legislative leadership who have sucked up tons of special interest money has consistently skewed the results in selected legislative races.  The money put in this year by various groups and the Pope family, merely leveled the playing field.

Fletcher Foundation ??

OK .... where's the corresponding report of Jim & Barbara Goodmon's Fletcher Foundation ?

The N&O's obsession with Art Pope is well-documented ..... but lets keep us informed on ALL the "local millionaire activists".  :>)
