Michael Weisel says the state treasurer should use the bully pulpit.
The Raleigh attorney, who is running for the Democratic nomination for the post, said he supports current treasurer Richard Moore's outspokenness on corporate governance.
Weisel said the treasurer is "a strong independent voice for fiscal responsibility."
"If you look at WorldCom and Enron and Tyco ... good corporate governance means accountability," he told Dome. "Speaking up for accountability and questioning accounting practices protects shareholders and shareholder value."
He said that helps with the treasurer's "top priority," which is protecting the state employees' pension fund.
