Vinroot disputed Mayberry Miracle

Andy GriffithRichard Vinroot didn't believe in the Mayberry Miracle.

In a Q-and-A with the Charlotte Observer in 2001, the former Charlotte mayor said he did not believe a last-minute ad by actor Andy Griffith handed the election to his opponent.

He said that everyone looks for "some simple explanation" after losing a campaign.

We had George Bush on television in the last week, and he won North Carolina by 56 percent. He's very popular here. I don't think Andy Griffith is more popular than George Bush in North Carolina, or more popular than Dean Smith. I don't think some ad is the reason.
