U.S. Senate: Cunningham is driven

The News & Observer and The Charlotte Observer are publishing profiles of the candidates running for the Democratic nomination for U.S. Senate. Dome will feature the stories when they run.

Cal Cunningham, the youngest candidate seeking the Democratic nomination for U.S. Senate, has gone from Lexington to Chapel Hill, London, Raleigh and an office in one of Saddam Hussein's Baghdad palaces. He has come back to West 3rd Avenue, where he lives with his wife and two children in a house built with bricks made by the company his great-grandfather started.

Dark-haired and trim, Cunningham is affable and easy-going - he played lead guitar in a garage band. And the man who has run six marathons is also driven.

Opponents say Cunningham has reversed himself on promises and made inconsistency his only constant. But those who know him say Cunningham has put a lot of thought into his beliefs.

Read the profile by The Charlotte Observer's Jim Morrill.
