Troubled Halifax schools lose chief

Halifax schools, a poor, rural district in the midst of a court-ordered state intervention, will go through early phases of an improvement plan without Superintendent Geraldine Middleton.

Middleton, who has led the district for about two years, told the Halifax school board Monday night she was resigning to take a job with the Chicago Public Schools, Lynn Bonner reports.

Her resignation is effective Sept. 18.

District personnel had an intensive training this summer in preparation for the beginning of the school year.

The state organized special training and coaching for teachers, principals and central office staff, and plans to take other steps when school begins.

The latest round of test results led to more than half of the districts' schools being labeled "low performing."
