Town hall with a price tag

The Republicans and others have been criticizing the Democratic congressmen for not holding town hall forums on health care.

Now the Democrats are going after GOP Sen. Richard Burr for attending a GOP town hall rally next month which requires a $50 admission charge or $250 for the VIP reception, Rob Christensen reports.

“Whether it’s a $2,000 steak dinner with health industry lobbyists or a $50 town hall rally, clearly you’ve got to pass through a velvet rope if you want to get to Richard Burr,” said state Democratic Party Executive Director Andrew Whalen. “North Carolina deserves a U.S. Senator to whom they can talk without paying the price of admittance.”

The Sept 1 town hall at the State Fairgrounds is designed to raise money for the Wake County GOP.

Re: Town hall with a price tag

Oh Mark Johnson have you seen the news release that says it is NOT A TOWNHALL. Geezus mark, get your head out from where the sun don't shine, please! It is a fundraiser!

Re: Town hall with a price tag

What is wrong with raising money? Both parties do it. I went to a fund raiser for Perdue last year, brought a check and didn't like what I heard and decided I wasn't going to vote for her. Well after that check cashed every Dem in the state started writing and calling for money. Repubs do the same but Dems went over the top.
Burr has visited our County on numerous times in the past few years. Walter Jones was here yesterday and met with our group for lunch. All you have to do is call their scheduler and be flexible with your time. Every politician I meet tell me they want to hear from the people in their district. I have never had a problem meeting with State or Fed elected officials and the same for Dems or Repubs. I don't buy their votes with a 50 dollar donation but I tell them thank you for serving and I also tell them when they are screwing up. (like the Dems are doing now). I always try never to talk policy at the same time as giving money. I learned that from Marc Basnight. There is time for both but they should be seperate.

Re: Town hall with a price tag

Mr. Andrew "Wail'n" is really grasping for anything to attack Burr!

First of all, the flyer clearly states that this event is a fundraiser for the Wake County GOP, which means that Senator Burr is their invited guest.

2009 Take Back Our Town Halls Rally

Perhaps the Wake County Democratic Party should have a fundraiser to recruit a candidate to run against Burr...

Nevertheless, why does the N&O continue to post these sort of comments from Mr. "Wail'n", yet can not get him to offer a quote on the situation surrounding State Senator R.C. Soles or the broken campaign promises of Governor Beverly Perdue or the use of campaign funds from the NCDP to assist with the legal fees of former Governor Mike Easley!

Both parties suck but one sucks more than the other right now...the burden of proof is on the Democrat Party and the are truly crumbling before our eyes!

meschreiner - Perhaps we should collaborate and teach a class on the Constitution and require attendance by all elected officials as they seem to have forgotten the importance and obligation they have to uphold that document!

Re: Town hall with a price tag

I've been looking in the N&O for days now, haven't seen an update or report of an arrest of the person who threatened Brad Miller's life. Isn't this what a gumshoe reporter is for?

Great Question?

Any response from the reporters at the N&O?

Re: Number of senators up for re-election

There are 100 U.S. senators. Each holds a six-year term. Under the terms of the Constitution of the United States of America, the senators are divided into three electoral 'classes.'

This means that every two years, about one third -- or about 33 percent -- of senators are up for election.

According to the U.S. Senate clerk, 34 U.S. Senate seats will be up for election in 2010.

In 2012, 33 U.S. Senate seats will be up for election. Another 33 U.S. Senate seats will be up for election in 2014.

It is correct that all 435 seats in the U.S. House of Representatives are up for election every two years, with the next election being held in 2010.

Re: Town hall with a price tag

25% of congressional senators and all congressional representatives are up
for re-election in 2010. 75% of the senators will face the voters in 2012.
These people are seriously misjudging the anger of the public not only
over the health care bill but the bailout, CARS and other spending issues.
I expect there will be a lot of new faces in Washington after the 2010
election.

Career politicians breed corruption and lies. Vote them out or they and their cronies die in office.

Option one...you win
Option two...you lose
