Lost in the shuffle of the Tillis-Tax-Thursday is Sen. Bob Rucho's reaction to Gov. Pat McCrory's stinging rebuke of the Senate GOP tax plan. Rucho attacked McCrory's business experience, echoing a Democratic line from the campaign.
AP's Gary Robertson with the call: Sen. Bob Rucho, R-Mecklenburg, one of the plan's authors, had stronger words Thursday evening, saying the governor and legislators pledged to voters to undertake comprehensive tax reform. "Merely sugar-coating a complex, antiquated, unfair and failing system will not revitalize our private sector and bring new jobs to North Carolina," Rucho wrote in an email, adding that "if Pat had real business experience, he would not make such a poor policy decision."
McCrory worked for what is now Duke Energy Corp. for nearly 30 years and more recently was a business consultant. Rucho is a retired dentist. Kim Genardo, the governor's communications director, said later that McCrory "respectfully disagrees" with Rucho's statement and "looks forward to a constructive dialogue" with legislators on taxes."
