Tax check off funds for political parties appears doomed

One of the last Watergate era reforms may soon be gone.

The House Elections Committee passed on a voice vote, apparently unanimously, to end a volunteer taxpayer $3 check-off program that helps subsidize the political parties.

During the 2011-2012 election, the state Democratic Party received $1.8 million, the Republican Party received $1.1 million and the Libertarian Party received $122,541 based on registration.

Gov. Pat McCrory had recommended the ending of funding.

The measure was passed during a period when there was concern about the political parties being corrupted by big money donors.
