Tar Heels feted by Senate, House

The national champion UNC-Chapel Hill basketball team was honored Wednesday by lawmakers.

Team members, coaches and staff listened to a reading of a Senate resolution which highlighted the squad's achievements and took a poke or two at rival teams in the state such as in the lines:

Whereas, the 89-72 Carolina win over Michigan State was a convincing and thorough victory but one that left intact Duke's record for the worst loss in Final Four history

and

Whereas, the senior players named above were undefeated in all away games played within a 12-mile radius of Chapel Hill;

But mostly the resolution was a celebration of the team and its achievements.

"I've been here 13 years and I think that's the best-written resolution and the greatest use of prose I've ever seen," said Lt. Gov. Walter Dalton, who presides over the Senate.

More after the jump.

—————

Sen. Tony Rand, a Fayetteville Democrat, urged the team to come back.

"Let's do it again," Rand said.

Rep. Verla Insko, a Chapel Hill Democrat, affectionately described the team's achievements after the team listened to a House resolution.

"This year we lived on a continuous endorphin high," Insko said. "Thank you for a year of pure and complete pleasure."

Head Coach Roy Williams said he and the team learned something about parliamentary procedure on Wednesday. After listening to the reading of the lengthy resolution in the Senate, the team was worried when they heard a second and third reading was necessary. They were relieved to learn that a "reading" is only a vote.

"As much as we loved the first reading, we're happy we didn't listen to the second and third reading," Williams said.

Did Burr introduce his own legislation in the US Senate as per this press release?

Re: Tar Heels feted by Senate, House

Aren't you tired of pulling for a loser team? Celebrate greatness, don't be a hater!

Re: Tar Heels feted by Senate, House

Of all the problem we have in NC state government, they have time to do this. Get to work doing the people's work. You are state employees and hopefully next year we will fire the majority of you and you can sit at home and do what ever you do. I sure hope the Senate and House take their pay cut. Now would be a good time to fire Mary Easley from her $180,000 job. How much does Bill Harris make as CEO of education? Of all the things Gov. Bev could cut she cut state employees pay, the 70 million dollars is only 2 to 3 percent of 3 billion. Another great decision by the Gov. Bev.
How was this decision made and where does she get advise from? Look at more at four, how much would did save? Let this people pay their own child care bill. The John Locke foundation had 1 billion dollars in savings it said that could save in state government, maybe Gov. Bev could get that report and look over it. Vote the bums out of office.

Re: Tar Heels feted by Senate, House

I am glad the Tarheels won the national championship, but I do agree that the NC Legislature could have spent their time in a more constructive way. This resolution did not require the presence of the Tarheel team and could have easily been presented to Coach Roy Williams without all this hoopla.

Gov. Perdue needs to talk to her "boys" and get them on the right track of conducting business and stop the horse play that is costing NC citizens. They set a poor example for all state employees.

I don't care if an elected official is immune to pay cuts. They should want to help the state out by cutting their pay starting with Gov. Perdue. I don't recall that she has offered to take less pay to help the condition of our state which she claims to love so dearly.

Come on Bev, take a pay cut. This would really show your character (if you have one).

Re: Tar Heels feted by Senate, House

Let's dock Williams's, the Governor's, the NC House and Senate members'
pay for the day since they goofed off today instead of working.
Then use the docked pay to pay the teachers.

Re: Tar Heels feted by Senate, House

The day after the Gov announced pay cuts for state employees, it is a bit insulting that she wasted the time of the governors office and state legislature with this nonsense over a college sports team. Doesn't the state govt have more important things to focus on? I hope they return the salaries they were paid during the time spent on this nonsense.

Re: Tar Heels feted by Senate, House

Aren't we all a little tired of hearing about the Tarholes by now?!
