Tancredo raising money from UNC visit

It took just a few hours for U.S. Rep. Tom Tancredo to turn his unpleasant ouster from a UNC-Chapel Hill classroom into a fund-raising opportunity.

Tancredo, a Colorado Republican and strong opponent of illegal immigration, was forced to end his visit Tuesday night after protests by a few dozen students. One student broke a window, and police unleashed pepper spray on others, Barb Barrett reports.

Tancredo didn't get to deliver his speech.

But today, he sent out a fund-raising email to supporters, saying "hundreds of protesters" interrupted his speech. He called it a "riot."

"There is no freedom of speech on hundreds of university campuses today for people who dare to dissent from the radical political agenda of the socialist left and the open borders agitators," he wrote in his email.

Tancredo said he'll be back on campus sometime in the future and noted that former Virginia Congressman Virgil Goode will come to campus next week to speak.

He also urged supporters to give money to his Political Action Committee, Team America.

After the jump, the letter.

—————

Dear Friend,

The open borders left once again proved just how "tolerant" they are yesterday when they rioted and shut down a speech I tried to give at the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill.

Riley Matheson, a former intern at Team America, and his group Youth for Western Civilization asked me to speak on the issue of in state tuition for illegal aliens. And the so called purveyors of tolerance and diversity showed just how open minded they are when it comes to diversity of opinions.

Hundreds of protesters yelled obscenities, tried to put a banner saying "No One is Illegal" in front of me. They even broke a window. The police used mace and threatened to use tasers, but no protesters were arrested or disciplined. There is no freedom of speech on hundreds of university campuses today for people who dare to dissent from the radical political agenda of the socialist left and the open borders agitators.

Bay and I are not deterred by these radicals and we're both going to be speaking on more campuses this week. We are also helping bring my friend Virgil Goode to UNC next week to make sure our message gets heard, and I plan to go back there again.

There's video of the riot and links to news stories at the Team America website for more information.

We know we're making a difference when we get the open borders crazies this upset.

Keep up the fight.

Your friend,

Tom

Re: Tancredo raising money from UNC visit

We don't have discussions in this country anymore; we demonize anyone who doesn't agree with us. We assail their character rather than their ideas. Both sides of the aisle are guilty and we all know it (and just because you claim the other side started it doesn't make your response in kind righteous!).

Folks, we are living in the era of the downfall of a once great country. Just like Rome, the US will decay into irrelavancy if we continue this BS. I hope the students are proud of themselves....they appear to be guilty of the same hate of which they protested.

Re: Tancredo raising money from UNC visit

Can some legal expert that reads this blog tell me why Mr. Oakley should not have been arrested by the UNC-Chapell-Hill police? And why shouldn't the federal government arrest Mr. Oakley for violation of Mr. Tancredo's civil rights?* Confuse

It's simple! Ms Annie Oakley did not take a shot at Tom while he was speaking about 2 amendment rights, and since when did the federal government take over UNC as a Federal State or Colony like Iraq?

lol! What does old Tom the hustler expect! Stilumus Money from the Obama and Bush Banker bailout to cover his losses! Didn't old Tom vote for the Patriot Act 1 and 2 and authorize the Bush Police State to read our e-mails without warrents..and sorted destroy the Consitution of the United States during his war mongering Republican days in Congress. And this racist dude is complaining about Free Speech?

Re: Tancredo raising money from UNC visit

Once again, the left-wing socialists show their true colors at yet another university campus. How much more of this are we going to take, people? Everytime a college conservative group publishes a newspaper or posts a flier about about a conservative meeting, they get trashed and torn down. These things are happening in the country of free speech???? You see, these people are socialists because they decide what can be seen and heard and read. And if doesn't fit their narrow-minded agenda, well, too bad: you lose.
We all do.

"Tancredo, a Colorado Republican and strong opponent of illegal immigration, was forced to end his visit Tuesday night after protests by a few dozen students."--N&O staff writers

OK boys, I saw most all of the videos that have been posted on this event and y'all are prevaricating big time. If one counts the protesters both inside Bingham Hall and within "noise making distance" outside around Bingham Hall (and riotous nose from outside Bingham Hall was easily heard on the audio tracks) then the number protesters comes a hell of a lot closer to 'Hundreds of protesters yelled obscenities, tried to put a banner saying "No One is Illegal" in front of me.'--Tom Tancredo THAN "a few dozen students"--N&O staff writers. And on another point Tancredo was far more accurate in characterizing his vocal opposition as "protesters" than the N&O is in characterizing them as "students" (unless of course the N&O reporters asked everybody to show their student ID cards)

Re: Tancredo raising money from UNC visit

Just one question keeps rolling around in my mind. What if mr. obama came to give a speech and a bunch of rednecks and some unc faculty harassed and heckled him, broke glass and tried to prevent him from speaking. The students would be expelled and the faculty fired so fast they wouldn't know what happened. So let us question what are the differences between the imaginary sceen above, and what really happened at unc. Folks we as a country cannot tolorate this kind of behavior. The students had ever right to oppose Tancredo's views, but they have no right to try to silience him, or take the rights of the folks that wished to here his message. As for the faculty that was involved they should be fired because they should have been teaching those students the proper way to voice their opinion through civil discussion.

Re: Tancredo raising money from UNC visit

This reveals the failing of the administration at UNC. While all of us support diversity of oppinion on the campus, particulary among the faculty, where is the support for diversity including conservative thought? Where is collegial discussion of issues? The students involved should be expelled. The faculty involved should receive a letter of reprimand and not be elgible for re-hiring, much less tenure. The actions of a few students and a few faculty are unexcusable and if the UNC administration does not rise to the occasion, they are not compentent to manage an institution of enlightened higher education.

Re: Tancredo raising money from UNC visit

The Left dominates UNC-CH and has for years with the encouragement of the N&O.

Last night's denial of Tancredo's speech rights by members of the fascistic Students for a Democratic Society and others, including at least one identified as a faculty member, reminded me of the Leftist "activists" at Duke who waved the CASTRATE and GIVE THEM EQUAL MEASURE banners when the now disbarred Mike Nifong began the public part of his and others attempt to frame for gang rape three transparently innocent Duke students.

The N&O disgraced itself than by shamelessly enabling Nifong.

The N&O's tepid reporting today of the terrible events of last evening leaves me thinking the N&O will again disgrace itself.

Hint to the N&O: Cover the silencing of Tancredo and the threats ("we know where you sleep") targeting students who sponsored his talk the same way you would if the speaker had been an African-American or Muslim bashing former President Bush and the students sponsoring the speaker largely African-American and/or Muslim.

Of course, something like that wouldn't and shouldn't happen at UNC-CH or any other college campus in America.

Re: Tancredo raising money from UNC visit

This is just too easy to address. The speaker is right. If the UNC students are proponents of a "live and let live" lifestyle, including their views on immigration, it is the height in hypocrisy to not let Tancredo speak. The students are practicing "hate" speech just as they attack Tancredo for allegedly doing the same thing.

Re: Tancredo raising money from UNC visit

Who is Mr. Oakley?

Re: Tancredo raising money from UNC visit

Isn't this the same wing nut that supported not rescheduling a gun show days after Columbine? Please, nothing could have made him happier than being interrupted. And the letter is hyperbole and nothing more.

Re: Tancredo raising money from UNC visit

I believe that this is a perfect example of what the left stands for and what tactics will be used to silence the free speech of ALL Americans who are not part of their crowd.

In all seriousness, where is the Rev, Barber II? Why isn't he screaming at the top of his lungs for the expulsion of Mr. Oakley and the other conspirators.

Can some legal expert that reads this blog tell me why Mr. Oakley should not have been arrested by the UNC-Chapell-Hill police? And why shouldn't the federal government arrest Mr. Oakley for violation of Mr. Tancredo's civil rights?
