State Rep. Jennifer Weiss, an outspoken veteran Democrat, announced Tuesday she would not seek another term.
Weiss represented Wake County for 12 years and called her decision difficult. "But I feel that it is time for me to take a break from politics, pursue some of my other interests and spend more time with my family and friends," she said in a statement.
Redistricting put Weiss in a different district covering the Cary and Morrisville area represented by Republican Tom Murry. Political observers consider the seat key to Democrats retaking the House. Weiss said she is confident another strong Democrat will step to the plate.
Her statement also leaves the door open for a future return to politics. "No matter what the future holds, I will continue to advocate for policies that move NC in a positive direction," she said. Read her full statement below:
"For the past twelve years, it has been a tremendous honor and privilege for me to represent the people of Wake County in the North Carolina House. Over the years, I have knocked on thousands of doors across the Triangle and listened to the views, concerns and suggestions of my constituents. I have worked with my colleagues to improve education and to prepare our workforce for 21st century jobs. I have fought to protect the health and safety of our children, senior citizens in our state and people with mental and physical disabilities. I have been a staunch advocate for public health and I have worked to preserve our air and water quality and to sustain and improve our quality of life.
"I have decided not to file for re-election in 2012. This has been a difficult decision for me but I feel that it is time for me to take a break from politics, pursue some of my other interests and spend more time with my family and friends. Serving in the NC House has been one of the greatest opportunities in my life. Not only have I had a seat at the table, and a voice and a vote to promote policies that I believe in, I have also met remarkable people who care deeply about helping to move our state forward.
"I will always be grateful to the people of the Triangle and across the State of NC who gave me the opportunity to serve in the NC House and provided me with help, advice and support. I feel very fortunate to have served under the leadership of former Speaker Hackney who continues to serve our state with distinction.
"I am confident that there will be a strong Democratic candidate running in House District 41 who will launch an effective campaign for the NC House and who will provide the new district with the leadership needed to make NC more competitive in the global economy and to address the critical needs of our state.
"I am honored to represent my constituents through the end of this year. No matter what the future holds, I will continue to advocate for policies that move NC in a positive direction."

Goodbye
February 7, 2012 - 2:18pm — PackMan97Glad to see another opponent of the first amendment leaving our government.
Regrettable
February 7, 2012 - 1:59pm — dubiousI completely agree. This one does hurt. It hurts when reasonable, hard-working representatives are driven out by extremists on both sides of the ideological spectrum. Party politics now is nothing more than pandering to the twenty percent on the fringes of both sides. I can only wonder how long it will take for us to realize that ultimately both sides will lose.
An honorable steward for her constituents and N.C.
February 7, 2012 - 11:33am — msspentyouthJennifer Weiss has represented my district well and fairly and has been one of the most hard-working legislators I've ever known. Her standards of integrity and follow-through in her work should be the standards by which others serve our citizens. Though I'm very sad to lose her as my representative in the N.C. General Assembly, I know that she'll continue to be a vital asset to our community and our state. And she'll be back one day to serve again!
I am a very conservative
February 7, 2012 - 11:14am — bennevis76I am a very conservative person and don't agree with Rep. Weiss on policy issues, but having observed her, she strikes me as an honorable person of integrity.
AND WHILE YOU'RE LEAVING
February 7, 2012 - 10:33am — aeiouy.....take your fellow nanny-staters Bordsen, Insko, Fisher, and Luebke with you.
BUH-BYE!
February 7, 2012 - 10:22am — aeiouyGlad to see that nanny-stater is leaving. I sent contributions to her opponents and don't even live in her district.
New disease strikes NC; CDC on the case
February 7, 2012 - 10:22am — The_Nags_HeadA strange new disease, called "familyitis," has been identified in North Carolina, according to the Centers for Disease Control. This illness strikes primarily Democratic Party members, causing them to give up lucrative positions at the public trough.
Apparently this disease is caused by a dificiency within the body of the immunity system called "safe seats," which is controlled by a small and relatively unknown body composed of the compounds known as "party hacks."
The CDC says that the primary treatment for this malady is a medical treatment called "cronyism," which, when administered liberally, has the effect of landing the sufferer in a cushy job for which they do not have to endure the whims of the primary cause of this illness, a virus called "voters."
I do not agree with Rep.
February 7, 2012 - 10:20am — CaryCurmudgeonI do not agree with Rep. Weiss on many of her positions, but I do not think the dems had a more ethical legislator in office to represent their views than her. I do not blame the repubs for doing exactly what the dems did with redistricting, but this one hurt. Rep. Weiss was most certainly not part of the corrupt dem machine and she will be sorely missed.
Good Riddance to Jennifer Broken Promises Weiss
February 7, 2012 - 10:17am — onto2012This woman told me that she only voted for a "temporary" state tax increase because it was only "temporary". When the "temporary" tax increase was expiring, guess who voted to make it permanent. When I asked her about her promise her response was that times had changed and the state needed the revenues.
Broken Promises. Good Riddance.
We, the people, need Rep. Weiss!
February 7, 2012 - 10:10am — heylisajohnThat is such a bummer! The people need her voice and skills so badly in the House. May she go on to more great work to the benefit of North Carolinians.
