Stam excused from budget vote

The House's $21.3 billion state budget proposal drew a majority of support from Republicans last week, but their leader took a pass, citing a potential conflict of interest.

House Minority Leader Paul Stam, an Apex Republican, received an excuse from voting on the budget bill. His wife, her relatives and some of his clients have property that could be in the path of the 18-mile Triangle Expressway, a planned toll road in western Wake County.

The state budget proposal includes $25 million in annual funding for the expressway.

Stam was allowed to debate and vote on unrelated amendments to the budget proposal.

Re: Stam excused from budget vote

Any legislator who cannot vote for the budget should resign.

What will the standard become and what will be the excuse used next time?

I believe that this was an act of cowardice - and Representative Stam was afraid to vote no.

RTB and others:

Everyone has some sort of conflict of interest regarding the budget as it is extremely comprehensive. Voting on the budget is a legislator's number one job and a leader should know this. Rep. Stam is a veteran and I respect and admire him. He has done great things for North Carolina, but I have to question his thought process on this one.

He received an excuse? Then it came from Hackney. Was Stam encouraged by Hackney (or Hackney's minions) not to vote? Is Rep. Stam being tainted by leadership and his proximity to the Democrats? Gosh, I hope not.
