Smith to take a break from barbecue

State Sen. Fred Smith will be taking a break from barbecue.

The Republican gubernatorial candidate told Dome recently that he will put his 100-county barbecue tour on hiatus over the holidays starting this week.

Smith recently held his 65th and 66th stops in Edgecombe and Nash counties. The Rocky Mount Telegram reports that he got loud applause calling for tighter controls on illegal immigration and a constituiional amendment banning gay marriage in Tarboro.

According to a map on his Web site, Smith has hit most of the major counties already.

Still left to go: Jackson, Polk, Rutherford, Alleghany, Ashe, Avery, Caldwell, Alexander and Lincoln counties in the West; Rowan, Cabarrus, Stanly, Montgomery, Randolph, Anson and Richmond counties in the Piedmont; and all of the coastal counties.

Smith has not yet held a barbecue in his home county of Johnston. Guess they already know him.

Wish Joby Warrick were still around so he could accompany Smith on the barbecue tour east of I-95. People do love barbecue but the factory farms still stink.

Re: Smith to take a break from barbecue

additionally,

I sure hope a constituiional amendment carries the same weight as a constitutional one or a lot of people are going to be looking rather ridiculous.

Re: Smith to take a break from barbecue

Is the tour a sign that North Carolinians like Fred Smith or because they (and Mr. Smith) like pulled or chopped pig?

It is good to see candidates reaching out to all parts of the state, though it seems Fred is reluctant to go east of I-95 yet. Maybe he prefers western/Lexington 'cue?

Re: Smith to take a break from barbecue

Your Dome blogger was in a hurry this morning. The post has been fixed.

In penance, we will put in a request for our own 100-county tour so that this problem won't arise in the future.

Not sure if we'll be able to get it past accounting, though...

Re: Smith to take a break from barbecue

perhaps the best indicator of Smith's status as the front-runner for the GOP nod is his ability to draw crowds and literally create events in these counties instead of waiting around for the next GOP meeting.

But of course one has to wonder, what's next after the last barbecue? the 100 county hey-remember-me tour?

I didn't realize that Bladen and Sampson county were considered to be in the Piedmont......
