Smith raised $1.1 million by April


Sen. Fred Smith raised $1,079,410 in contributions by mid-April.

The Republican candidate for governor raised $359,731 in donations from individuals in the first quarter of 2008.

Major donors include Leary Davis, dean of the Elon University law school, Tommy Haddock, president of TriArc Food Systems and Greg Johnson, president of Homes by Greg Johnson.

Smith has added $2.4 million in loans to his campaign giving him a total of $3.5 million in his run for governor. Smith received $70,000 from PACs or other political committees.

In the first quarter of 2008, Smith spent $12,000 with CC Advertising of Herndon, Va., for a phone survey. Smith spent $300,000 on his campaign manager's firm. Smith spent $100,000 on Lee Greenwood's company for entertainment. Smith's advertising bill from Stevens, Reed, Curcio & Potholm of Alexandria, Va., was $279,000.

He ended the quarter with $150,000 on hand.
