Senate votes to ban novelty lighters

The Senate approved a bill that would ban the sale of most novelty lighters.

Sen. Austin Allran, a Hickory Republican and sponsor of the bill, brought a box of the lighters to show his Senate colleages why children would be drawn to the fire.

He brandished a lighter that resembles the Disney character "Nemo." The flame comes out of the fish's mouth when you depress the back fin.

"They're very entertaining but they're also very dangerous," Allran said.

Allran also displayed lighters that looked like a deck of cards, an astronaut, a fishing rod, a cell phone and a miniature shotgun. All were made in China and none comply with child safety standards.

In 2006, a North Carolina child suffered second degree burns while playing with a lighter that looked like a cell phone, Allran said.

Sen. David Hoyle, a Gastonia Democrat, said that the bill would leave convenience stores stuck with boxes of lighters they could no longer sell. Ultimately, he said, parents need to be responsible for keeping lighters away from children.

"Somewhere along the way, somebody's got to take some personal responsibility," Hoyle said.

The bill easily passed the Senate Thursday and next moves to the House.

After the Senate adjourned, one of Dome's press corps colleagues nearly burned herself on the astronaut lighter.

There are more pressing issues to be sure. Geesh!

Re: Senate votes to ban novelty lighters

I just cannot wait until the Governor stands in front of the camera at the official signing lauding how once again she is "protecting the chil'ren." What a total waste of time!

I suspect that it is too much to wish for someone in Raleigh, elected or appointed, to act like they actually have common sense or a brain?

Shouldn't our representatives at least work part of the week on the NC budget deficit that keeps on soaring?

Re: Senate votes to ban novelty lighters

Since the Senate saw it fit to ban the lighters, albeit a novelty, why don't they ban the cigarettes as well? Ban the junk foods as they are also harmful to a child's health; ban the video games that corrupts the mind of the young one. It seems they are quite selective on the things they find time to ban.
Ban everything that's not natural. weight loss girl

OMG, now we got a Republican acting NANNY state. I am a republican and I disgree with this. Too bad no liberals will go against nanny state like making it a crime to text while driving.

No wonder N.C. Republicans still out of power

This story is enough to make a conservative cry. But I'll resist the urge, since my tears could cause a puddle to form, which could then cause a child to slip and fall. That would be some costly litigation.

This is enough to spawn a new generation

of Libertarians. What a bunch of bs.

time so well spent

Re: Senate votes to ban novelty lighters

This is ridiculous. Should the government hire personal babysitters for everyone too busy to pay attention to what their kids are getting into as well?

Re: Senate votes to ban novelty lighters

This is news how?

Re: Senate votes to ban novelty lighters

Wow!...I feel sooo safe now! Our state senators dont bother themselves with the little issues of gangs, crime, budget problems, corruption and the like, but concentrate on such vital important issues as...lighters...I feel all giddy inside...

All this time I thought that Republicans were the ones preaching personal responsibility
