Sen. Malone dies

Vernon Malone, who dedicated much of his life to serving Wake County as a school board member, county commissioner and state legislator, died today. He was 77.

In the 1970s, Malone was a fierce advocate for the merging of the county and city school systems. When running for re-election to the state senate in 2008, he continued to emphasize his support for public schools.

In addition to his public-service career, Malone worked 34 years as a teacher and administrator with the Governor Morehead School for the Blind.
