Sen. John Garwood dies

Former Sen. John Garwood died Tuesday at his home in North Wilkesboro, according to the Wilkes Journal Patriot.

Garwood, a Republican, represented Wilkes County in the Senate from 1997 to 2006, following service as a Wilkes County Commissioner. He was also a veteran, serving as a paratrooper in the Army from 1953 to 1955.

Garwood, who was 78, is survived by his sister, wife, daughter and two sons, along with six grandchildren. Funeral services will be held 11 a.m. Friday at the Wilkesboro United Methodist Church. A private burial will be held following the service. A reception will be held Thursday at 6 p.m. at Reins-Sturdivant Funeral Home.
