Rosa Gill chosen to fill Dan Blue's House seat

The executive committee of the Wake County Democratic Party has named Wake school board chairwoman Rosa Gill to fill the state House seat being vacated by Dan Blue.

Gill narrowly defeated Bernard Allen Jr. this evening, picking up 21 votes, one more than needed for the District 33 seat. Gov. Bev Perdue still needs to appoint Gill but under state law she has to take the Democratic Party's choice because Blue is from that party.

The school board will now have to pick a replacement for Gill's District 4 seat, which covers Southeast Raleigh. The other eight members will appoint a replacement to finish out Gill's term, which expires November 2011.

Her term as school board chairwoman expires Tuesday.

Gill, 65, a former teacher, state DMV administrator and Wake County Democratic Party chairwoman, has served on the school board since 1999. She has tried several times over the years to get a seat on the General Assembly.

Most recently, Gill had expressed interest in filling the state Senate seat of the late Vernon Malone. But Blue was appointed to take that seat, paving the way for her to get his post.

"She created division in our Wake County community over her busing and spending priority policies."

I remind you sir that those policies are now supported by an elected 8-1 majority.

Rosa Gill will be kind to you, Paul Terrell III. She's a nice person. She also has the advantage of a modicum of sense, so you're already at a pretty severe disadvantage.

Even in the Democratic Party there is division over who should serve. She picked up one more vote than needed to complete the rest of Dan Blue's term.

It will be a delight in debating Rosa Gill on the issues concerning schools, tax increasing, budget mismanagement and overall government responsibilities.

She created division in our Wake County community over her busing and spending priority policies. I will be ready to challenge her on record and the votes she places now in the NC State House.
