Read Perdue's budget

Gov. Bev Perdue released her fiscal 2011 budget proposal this morning.

The $19 billion spending plan includes nearly $1 billion in cuts, including the elimination of 600 positions, mostly vacant jobs. It includes new money to ease urban congestion and to help spur economic development.

Read the budget proposal. Post any thoughts or items of interest in the comments section.

2010 budget comments

- 2010 budget reduces public school funding by 2% while increasing funding for community colleges (+7%). This is a transfer of the funding of public education from the state to local govt property tax. Given the reduced funding level, the state should then reduce the amount of SDPI oversight and meddling.
- 2010 budget reduces justice and public safety by 1.5% mostly in corrections and judicial - is this appropriate given the deteriorating public safety in most communities?
- 2010 budget increases general govt funding by 2.3% with most in the controller's office and revenue - I believe a decent explanation is required.
- 2010 increases Captial Improvements by 120%. While recent budgets have perhaps underfunded such items is this the year for the increase?
