Cupcake shop owner introduces Obama

Raleigh businesswoman Sara Coleman introduced President Barack Obama Wednesday.

Coleman left Johnson & Johnson to start the Cupcake Shoppe Bakery on Glenwood Avenue, not far from Broughton High School, where the town hall meeting was taking place.

The business has 10 employees and cannot provide health care insurance to them because she can't afford it. She said it's difficult to compete for employees against businesses that do offer health insurance.

Obama thanked Coleman for the introduction and told the audience that she gave him a T-shirt from her shop, but no cupcakes.

"I know I've been talking about health care a lot, but I think cupcakes are good for your health," Obama said to laughter.

+1 for a cogent deconstruction.

Re: Cupcake shop owner introduces Obama

How will the government running the healthcare industry allow Sara Coleman to provide coverage for her employees? Who pays for it if not her? Bigger cupcake corporations? Ones that don't operate out of a cute little cupcake shop on the nicest part of Glenwood Avenue?

To quote this lady: "She (Coleman)said it's difficult to compete for employees against businesses that do offer health insurance." Has this lady thought about checking with other smallish businesses that do offer health coverage and ask what they are doing differently? Isn't it possible that some businesses that offer coverage now didn't when they were small and growing or just starting out? Maybe she can find out what businesses did to retain employees until they could provide health coverage. I guess in this lady's mind there is nothing that can harm her small business as much as not letting the government get more involved in helping her to run it. Sad commentary.
