How will you measure success in your first year in office?
I'm definitely going to be working on getting vocational centers open and bringing about the crime commission.
Tell us about something you did for someone else.
I work with ex-offenders through the group Triangle Citizens Rebuilding Communities.
We try to help them get employment and get connected back to the community. We help them with housing and sometimes with food. I've been doing that since 2002-03.
What is the biggest challenge facing North Carolina? Your county? Your district?
The youth, the severe crime problem and unemployment that is plaguing, particularly, the African-American community. I would like to see a crime commission created in the county — a board of about 12 commission members to bring recommendations on how to address the crime problem in this community. I would also like to see a vocational center and an unemployment office focused just on Durham residents.
