Ty Richardson is a former candidate for the Democratic nomination for state Commissioner of Labor.
Early Life and Education
Tyrone Richardson was born Jan. 14, 1950, in Smithfield, N.C., to John and Mildred Richardson.
He later moved with his parents to Wake County, where his father worked in a tobacco processing plant and his mother taught elementary school in Clayton.
Richardson graduated from St. Augustine's College in Raleigh in 1974 with a degree in physical education.
Career
He was a member of the Marine Corps in the six years after his graduation.
He then worked in the N.C. Department of Crime Control and Public Safety for the division of emergency management. He developed plans for shelters during the Cold War.
Richardson then worked in Saudi Arabia, where he helped train troops. He returned to North Carolina to join the National Guard.
Political Career
He has worked on state and local campaigns, including those of Gov. Jim Hunt and Utilities Commissioner Howard Lee in his 1976 campaign for lieutenant governor.
Richardson was a fellow in 1998 at the Institute of Political Leadership, a program that trains students through more than 50 seminars on communication, public policy and campaigns.
In 2008, he ran unsuccessfully in the Democratic primary for state labor commissioner, coming in third out of four candidates in his first try for statewide office.
