Early Life and Education
Timothy Cook grew up on a tobacco farm in Browns Summit, N.C.
He obtained an associate's degree from Rockingham Community College and a bachelor's degree in biology from Greensboro College.
Professional Career
Cook works as an industrial chemist with Chemol Co. in Greensboro.
Criminal Record
Cook was convicted of a misdemeanor charge of assaulting a female in 2000.
He was granted a prayer for judgment, which means that there will be no penalty if he stays out of trouble. Cook has said he is innocent of the charge.
Political Career
Cook has never held office in North Carolina.
He previously ran unsuccessfully for the Republican nominations for lieutenant governor in 2004 and U.S. Senate in 2002.
He said that the government should do more to combat illegal immigration and that North Carolina should scrap the education lottery.
He also said he will raise no more than $3,000 in this year's election bid.
He faced former Congressional candidate Greg Dority, state Sen. Robert Pittenger and former lieutenant governor candidate Jim Snyder in the Republican primary in 2008.
He came in third, with 12 percent of the vote.
