Early Life and Education
Paul Martin Newby was born May 5, 1955, to Samuel O. and Ruth Parks Newby.
He was raised in Jamestown, graduating from Ragsdale High School.
He received a bachelor of arts in public policy studies, graduating magna cum laude from Duke University.
He earned a law degree from UNC-Chapel Hill.
Professional Career
Newby served as a judicial intern in the U.S. Supreme Court and interned in the 18th Judicial District public defender's office in Greensboro/High Point.
He worked as a private attorney in Asheville with Van Winkle, Buck, Wall, Starnes and Davis.
He was vice president and general counsel of Cannon Mills Realty and Development Corp. in Kannapolis.
In 1985, he was appointed assistant U.S. attorney in Raleigh, serving for 19 years.
He has taught courses for the U.S. Department of Justice and at Campbell University's law school.
Political Career
In 2004, he was elected to serve the remainder of an eight-year term following the resignation of Supreme Court Justice Bob Orr.
He defeated longtime N.C. Appeals Court Judge Jim Wynn and Wake County Superior Court Judge Howard Manning, among others.
His term ends in 2010.
