Early Life and Education
Moses Carey Jr. was born on May 28, 1945, in Tampa, Fla.
He graduated from Middleton High School in Tampa in 1963.
He earned a bachelor of science in health and physical education from Fort Valley State College (now University) in Georgia in 1967.
He earned a master of science in public health from UNC-Chapel Hill in 1972.
He earned a law degree from N.C. Central University in 1980.
Professional Career
Carey has worked as a professor, manager and health care leader.
Most recently, he was director of the health disparities program at N.C. Central's department of health education.
He's also served as executive director for Piedmont Health Services.
Political Career
In 1984, he was elected to the Orange County board of commissioners. He served six terms.
He ran unsuccessfully for a seat in the state Senate in 2008, losing in the Democratic primary to incumbent Sen. Ellie Kinnaird.
Perdue Administration
On Jan. 5, 2009, Gov. Beverly Perdue appointed Carey head of the state's Employment Security Commission.
He had contributed $350 to her campaigns since 2004.
