Synopsis | Mike Munger learned about politics from the other end. The chairman of Duke University's political science department since 2000, he decided in 2006 to run for governor as a Libertarian. Because the party is not officially recognized, he first had to collect more than 65,000 signatures. To that end, he has pledged to visit all 100 counties in North Carolina. He was the only third-party gubernatorial candidate on the ballot in 2008. |

Early Life and Education
Mike Munger was born in Gotha, Fla.
He earned a bachelor's degree in economics from Davidson College near Charlotte in 1980.
He then earned a master's and Ph.D. in economics from Washington University in St. Louis in 1982 and 1984.
Family and Religion
He is married to Donna Gingerella and has two sons.
He attends St. Francis of Assisi Catholic Church in Raleigh.
Professional Career
After college, he worked as a staff economist for the Federal Trade Commission from 1984 to 1985.
He taught economics at Dartmouth College from 1985 to 1986.
He taught government at the University of Texas from 1986 to 1990, and at UNC-Chapel Hill from 1990 to 1997.
He began working for Duke University in 1997. Since 2000, he has chaired the political science department.
2008 campaign
He petitioned to get on the 2008 ballot as a gubernatorial candidate from the Libertarian Party.
To be recognized by the state of North Carolina, he will need to collect more than 65,000 signatures.
He will be the only third-party gubernatorial candidate to appear on the ballot.
He lost to Gov. Beverly Perdue, winning 2.9 percent of the vote.
