Synopsis

Linda Wheeler Hayes is the secretary of the N.C. Department of Juvenile Justice and Delinquency Prevention and a member of Gov. Beverly Perdue's Cabinet. Hayes served as chairwoman of the Governor's Crime Commission, an advisory body for the governor that administers federal grants awarded to the state. She worked as a fundraiser for Gov. Mike Easley's 2000 campaign. In 2009, Perdue named Hayes to secretary of Juvenile Justice. She is the first woman and only the second person to head the department, which was created in 2000.

Early Life and Education

Linda Wheeler Hayes attended Greensboro College. 

She is from Dunn.

Political Career

Hayes served as chairwoman of the Governor's Crime Commission, an advisory body for the governor that administers federal grants awarded to the state.

She was also southern regional chairwoman for the National Coalition of Juvenile Justice Advisory Groups. 

An internal document from Gov. Mike Easley's 2000 campaign shows that Wheeler and four others had a goal of raising $60,000 from Harnett County. 

She contributed $10,500 to Perdue's campaigns in recent years, including $8,000 toward her gubernatorial bid. 

Perdue Administration

On Jan. 2, 2009, Perdue named Hayes to secretary of Juvenile Justice.

She is the first woman and only the second person to head the department, which was created in 2000.
