Hugh Webster is a former state senator and a candidate for U.S. Congress.
Early Life and Education
Hugh B. Webster was born to leGrand and Kathleen Webster in a family farm house off what is now Highway 119 in rural Caswell County. His father was a tobacco farmer; his mother ran a country store.
He graduated from Bartlett Yancey High School in Yanceyville in 1961.
He then attended UNC-Chapel Hill, earning a bachelor of science in business administration in 1968 and a specialty in accounting in 1969.
He earned a certificate in tax research from the University of Illinois in 1971.
Family Life
He married Patricia Ramey on Aug. 12, 1967.
They have two sons, LeGrand and Noel.
Military Service
He served in the Army in 1967, leaving with the rank of private.
Professional Career
After leaving the military, he worked for a small CPA firm in Charlotte for a year and then he returned to UNC.
He took the CPA exam in 1969. He is no longer a CPA.
Webster has worked as an auditor and tax specialist for major accounting firms in the U.S., Latin America and Africa, and done contract audit work for the U.S. departments of Defense and Labor in the U.S. and Europe.
He worked for 30 years as a self-employed accountant in Yanceyville, providing tax preparation and small-business services.
He has also worked as a farmer, raising tobacco, grain and cattle.
Political Career
Webster was first elected in 1994 to the state Senate, representing Caswell and Alamance counties and parts of Person County.
He was re-elected five times, serving until 2006.
During 12 years in office, he served on various committees, including finance and appropriations, environment and natural resources, and agriculture. He worked on several bills affecting state taxes.
He sponsored a bill, known as the "Baby Greer Act," that would allow prosecutors to charge people convicted of murdering a pregnant woman with double homicide. Similar bills are still under discussion in the legislature.
He is running as a Republican against incumbent U.S. Rep. Brad Miller, a Raleigh Democrat, in the 13th Congressional District. The two had frequently sparred when they served in the legislature together.
His campaign issues include reducing federal spending, protecting constitutional rights of free speech and gun ownership and repealing the federal income tax. He thinks decisions about Iraq should be made by the president.
