How will you measure success in your first year in office?
The first thing I’d do is examine the staff and policies. I don’t many of the atorrneys or other staff. I would want to get to know them, interview them and decide whether they would be a dedicated employuee That would take some time. The lack of public scrutiny hopefully would be a measure. I would be hopeful that people, first of all, would sit on the sidelines and give me a chance to improve things and then we would think about it. I want to personally feel good about the job I’ve done.
Tell us about something you did for someone else.
The highlight of my career was releasing Raymond Parker. [Black successfully argued before a Durham judge in May 2007 to release Parker from prison after he served 27 years of a 40-year sentence for robbing a woman of $173.] First of all, Raymond denied commiting the crime from the very first. Obviously if you have to try a case three times to get a conviction, obviously something if wrong with the case.
What is the biggest challenge facing North Carolina? Your county? Your district?
I think it’s crime. The criminals aren’t scared.
