Early Life and Education
Erskine Bowles was born Aug. 8, 1945. He was raised in Greensboro.
His father, Skipper Bowles, ran for governor.
He graduated from UNC-Chapel Hill in 1967.
He graduated from Columbia University's Graduate School of Business in 1969.
Family

Business Career
Bowles began his career in the financial sector with a position at Morgan Stanley & Co. in New York. Bowles later founded an investment banking firm in Charlotte which later became Bowles Hollowell Connor & Co. He was also a founder in two other companies: Kitty Hawk Capital and Carousel Capital.
Bowles served in the Clinton administration as director of the Small Business Administration in 1993. In 1994 he became deputy White House chief of staff, and then in 1996 he was appointed to White House chief of staff. He served in that position until 1998, which included the time when President Clinton was being investigated for his affair with Monica Lewinsky. When asked what he is proudest of during his time as Chief of Staff, Bowles said, "I think I have brought some stability to some pretty turbulent times.''
After leaving the White House Bowles returned to the financial sector as a general partner in the New York-based company Forstmann Little.
In 2005 Bowles was appointed United Nations deputy special envoy to 13 tsunami-affected countries in Southeast Asia. Traveling and coordinating relief efforts in the Far East for months was, he says, the most meaningful experience of his life.
Bowles currently serves on the boards of General Motors, Morgan Stanley, Cousins Properties, and NC Mutual Life Insurance Co.
