William A. Stephens was born on March 30, 1945, in Rocky Mount but grew up on a family farm in Hexalena.
His parents moved to Georgia when he was five years old, but Stephens stayed for several years in North Carolina with his grandmother and attended school in Aulander. After completing fifth grade, Stephens joined his parents in Georgia.
Stephens holds a bachelor's degree in business administration from Georgia State University in Atlanta, Ga., in 1970.
He later briefly studied law at Kensington University through a correspondence course.
Professional Career
Stephens has worked in sales and technology management. He has served as director of management information systems for Allied Signal Corporation, director of systems development for EMI Music and CEO of The Seminars Group.
Prior to his return to North Carolina, Stephens was managing partner for William Stephens and Associates, a West Coast Internet and communications software consulting firm. He returned to Bertie County five years ago and founded ASL Computing in Colerain.
Political Career
Stephens volunteered on several campaigns for state office in California, including that of Gov. Arnold Schwarzenegger.
He decided in November 2007 to run against U.S. Rep. G.K. Butterfield for the District 1 House seat because he said he disagrees with the representative's stance on education.
If elected, he said he would promote "Equal Opportunity Scholarships," or vouchers, for low-income and minority students and a program that would require public school administrators to teach in order to keep high-quality educators in classrooms.
Stephens held an kickoff rally Jan. 28 in Greenville. He filed for office Feb. 13.
