Synopsis

Courtney Crowder is the governor's legislative director. A graduate of N.C. Central and Duke University, he worked as a district representative for U.S. Rep. Bob Etheridge and then served as legislative liaison to the N.C. Department of Insurance under Commissioner Jim Long and as a lobbyist for private firm Capstrat. In December of 2008, Gov.-elect Beverly Perdue named him her legislative director.

Courtney Crowder is the governor's legislative director.

Early Life and Education

Courtney Ansel Crowder was born Nov. 6, 1976, in Raleigh. He is a lifelong resident of Southeast Raleigh.

He graduated from Garner Senior High in 1995.

He graduated cum laude with a bachelor's degree in English literature and French from N.C. Central University in 2000.

He earned a master's degree in liberal studies from Duke University in 2004.

He also studied history, politics and society at University of Oxford in England.

He is a member of the Alpha Phi Alpha fraternity. 

Professional Career 

From 2000 to 2003, he worked as a district representative for U.S. Rep. Bob Etheridge.

In 2002, he managed Etheridge's re-election campaign, helping him garner 65 percent of the vote — the largest percentage of votes he had ever received. 

In 2003, he was elected the first black president of the North Carolina Young Democrats.

That year, the Hotline, an Internet newsletter based in Washington, and The News & Observer both named him one of eight "rising stars" among North Carolina Democrats. 

From 2003 to 2006, he served as legislative liaison and special assistant to the N.C. Department of Insurance under Commissioner Jim Long.

In 2004, he served as political director for the N.C. Democratic Party's coordinated campaign and a delegate to the Democratic National Convention.

In the spring of 2004, he was one of eight delegates with the American Council of Young Political Leaders' study program in Indonesia and Malaysia.

From 2006 to 2008, he worked as a lobbyist for Capstrat, a private consulting firm in Raleigh.

He began a two-year stint as third vice chairman of the state Democratic Party in 2007. 

Volunteer Work

He serves on the board of DHIC, a nonprofit housing developer in Raleigh; Artspace, a nonprofit visual arts center; and the N.C. Center for Voter Education, a nonpartisan group that advocates for public campaign finance.

He also served as state chairman of GenerationEngage, a youth civic engagement initiative. 

Political Career 

In November of 2008, he was one of five analysts on a Capstrat report on what Gov.-elect Beverly Perdue might do in office.

In December of 2008, Perdue named him her legislative director.
