B.J. Lawson is a candidate for the Republican nomination for the Fourth Congressional District.
Early Life and Education
He was born March 30, 1974, in Plantation, Fla., to Bill and Joanne Lawson. His father is a sales representative for a shelving system and now lives in Texas.
He graduated from Lakeland Senior High School in Lakeland, Fla., in 1992.
After high school, he moved to North Carolina to study biomedical and electrical engineering at Duke University, earning a bachelor's degree in 1996.
He then studied for a doctorate of medicine at Duke, graduating in 2000.
Professional Career
After college, he worked a year in a neurosurgery residency at Duke Medical Center.
He left his residency in 2001 to start a medical software company, Mercury M.D., which helped streamline information to caregivers' smart phones, Blackberries and PDAs.
He sold his stake in the company in 2006.
Political Career
A lifelong Republican, he volunteered for the campaign of President George H.W. Bush in 1988.
He is running for the Republican nomination for the Fourth Congressional seat held by Rep. David Price. He faces Augustus Cho in the Republican primary.
If elected, he said he would work on reducing the size of the federal government, cutting the national debt and cutting red tape to help small business entrepeneurs. He supports the Fair Tax proposal to create a national sales tax to replace the federal income tax.
