Poll: Raise sin taxes

North Carolina residents are ready to raise the taxes on sin.

So say the latest results from the Elon University Poll, which asked whether people would support a hike in the so-called "sin taxes" on cigarettes and alcohol.

The poll surveyed 758 North Carolina residents from Feb. 22-26. It has a margin of error of plus or minus 3.6 percentage points.

Here's what they had to say:

Liquor tax: 78 percent support tax increase, 18 percent oppose

Wine tax: 76 percent support increase, 20 percent oppose

Cigarette tax: 73 percent support increase, 23 percent oppose

Beer tax: 72 percent support increase, 23 percent oppose

Re: Poll: Raise sin taxes

Personally, I am most mortified to be named a "Sinner" by Government! They run the great gambling institution of the Education Lottery. They - well you read the news - but isn't Greed one of the Seven Deadlies? As much money as the lottery is making on poor folks' bill money, our children should be riding to school in stretch limos, yet teacher's still can't get the supplies they need! Smoking and alcohol are not mentioned though I suppose overindulgence can qualify as Gluttonny.... I could rant in 100 different directions here, and probably will elsewhere, however I will finish with this: To be judged by some elite group that are clearly not of my world is offensive, and as sin is a word associated with the bible, and judging of others is clearly a no-no there, I want them to be rounded up to pay my share of the tax.

Re: Poll: Raise sin taxes

I find it interesting that nowhere in this survey/discussion is there any mention of taxing soft-drinks. With our current epidemic of childhood obesity and type-2 diabetes as well as the inability of Medicaid to adequately fund dental care, that seems to be a logical "sin" to tax. These bottles/cans of high fructose corn syrup sweetened liquid candy have no redeeming value.

Re: From domewatcher

You have to be kidding. My response was a reasonable interpretation of your post.

Your last post made no sense whatsoever...

'I will admit that my post made no sense at all. Not to be too critical but your response didn't seem to make much sense to me either.

What I was trying to say is that if you tax us sinners much more.....then we will not have any money left over to give to the church. And by not giving money to the church we will be condemned to be sinners with no hope of salvation.

I'm not sure what you were saying but I'm sure I would agree with you if I could understand it. '

I am beginning to think there is something neurologically wrong with you....

Re: Poll: Raise sin taxes

How do the responses here compare to Elon's Poll regarding the proposed 'sin tax' increases?

Filtering out the comic responses, it looks like this:

N&O bloggers: 1-2 in support tax increase, 9 oppose.

That breaks down to something like this:

15 percent support tax increase, 85 percent oppose.

Compare to Elon's Poll below:

Liquor tax: 78 percent support tax increase, 18 percent oppose

Wine tax: 76 percent support increase, 20 percent oppose

Cigarette tax: 73 percent support increase, 23 percent oppose

Beer tax: 72 percent support increase, 23 percent oppose

So is the Elon poll correct?

Re: To domewatcher

Anyone who wants a profile on a liberal, read this. I have included come clarification on what domewatcher means:

I do not think that we should raise alcohol taxes straight across the board. The tax on alcohol should be tied to one's income or "lot in life."

('lot in life' is something one is not responsible for. It just happens to them. The thinking is people have no ability to choose. They are victims)

Poor people drink because they are distressed over their wretchedness. Rich people drink because they are happy they were born rich or either married a rich girl.

(Note that there is no explanation of how people attain wealth ultimately other than getting it from others (Parents or spouse). If pushed to explain how the wealth was attained, the liberal answer is that the wealth was stolen from the poor. Hard work and providing goods and services people want of course is simply a myth.)

So the poor man's drinking is somewhat medicinal while the rich man is celebrating his good fortune. Let's not further throw off on the poor man. Give him a break. An alcohol tax will never hurt a rich man.

(to my simple mind, no one who drinks because they are miserable is doing much medicinal good for themselves. Especially if it is in lieu of figuring out how to become a productive member of society and doing the hard work of creating a life they are happy with. You know, the American dream is available to anyone who wants to pursue it. You just have to get off your ass and make it happen, not wait for someone to give it to you).

Let's try to be fair!

(You don't know the meaning of fair, dumbwatcher.)

Re: Poll: Raise sin taxes

where was i at when all the voting was happening? i am an american citizen and i would like to vote........um................NO, DON'T RAISE MY TAXES! what a joke.

Re: Poll: Raise sin taxes

"legalize pot and sell it in ABC stores and tax it"
That would raise a lot of money!

Re: Poll: Raise sin taxes

With a huge deficit, a brilliant new stimulus plan which spends $600Billion on healthcare not to proven to cover the working poor, some number of billions for some obscure Global Warming funding (when the Polar Ice Caps are thicker than they have ever been and the greatest global warming evangelists live in 20,000+ square foot homes and have carbon footprints 100 times that of us meer mortals) ... I think we should do more taxing of everything. Afterall, the gov't knows so much better what to do with my hard earned dollars than I do. I don't know why they let me keep any of it (although they seem intent on eventually getting it all anyway). More taxes more taxes more taxes!!! The economy is only wounded, let's go ahead and kill it with taxes and entitlements. And by all means, let's repeal the second amendment. Once we do that, the people will have no more threat to the government, so they can finish the job of removing all of our freedoms.

Re: Poll: Raise sin taxes

Yep, cat's out of the bag...the truth is out...North Carolinians are, indeed, complete and utter idiots...and, as Ron White says, "You can't fix stupid."

Re: Poll: Raise sin taxes

Im sorry, but I dont believe the numbers given for results...70+ % of the people surely would not want to TAX these items ANY MORE than they already are, unless they are IDIOTS??? Are 70% IDIOTS? must be...

Re: Poll: Raise sin taxes

Let put a tax on every stupid idea that comes out of Washington and Raleigh. We could balance the budget in a week.

Re: Poll: Raise sin taxes

don't blame liberals in general, the democrats are the tax lovers.

Re: Poll: Raise sin taxes

I've never seen an Elon poll that didn't support a liberal agenda.

They asked people if they'd support raising taxes and the vast majority say yes without even considering what those tax revenues would be spent on?

Do they ever consider the possibility that the government could cut thousands of money wasters and put money back into the hands of the people?

I guess it's easy to be selective and tax somebody else's vice.

Bring on the fair tax.

Re: Poll: Raise sin taxes

I would like to see a sin tax on men who color their hair. There are few greater sins than a men coloring their hair! It's fine for women because they are appealing to shallow men. But women are not shallow and they see through these phony men.

I did not always agree with Governor Easley but he never colored his hair.....to my knowledge. His white hair stood as a beacon to all of North Carolina's men. His hair took nature's course....with grace!

Tax any man who colors his hair. We need to curtail this practice and raise money at the same time. Men, say "no" to coloring your hair and accept the master plan of growing old with grace and dignity.

Re: Poll: Raise sin taxes

Hey, that sounds like a good idea, verrildd.

After all, gluttony is a sin so why shouldn't it fall in with the other "sin" taxes? Maybe if we tax fast food America will become less obese, and we could lesson our national debt while we're at it!

Re: Poll: Raise sin taxes

We're taxed enough. I'm stunned so many people are on board for more taxes. Are we gonna tax cupcakes, big macs, and prime rib also?

I say we tax food stamps, rent subsidies, and welfare checks.

As for the proposed tax on bullets - way to steal Chris Rock's schtick.

Re: Poll: Raise sin taxes

I would support a raise in sin taxes, if the ABC stores were open later and on holidays. If you want to totally erase the deficit in NC, legalize pot and sell it in ABC stores and tax it.

Re: Poll: Raise sin taxes

How about a tax on bullets? Maybe $5,000 per bullet. This would not infringe on the "right" to bear arms, but would make someone think twice before pulling the trigger. Someone with an automatic weapon could be paying millions in taxes. We could easily erase the deficit!
