Poll: N.C. split on Sotomayor

A poll shows North Carolinians split on the nomination of Sonia Sotomayor.

The survey by Democratic firm Public Policy Polling found 43 opposed confirming Sotomayor to the U.S. Supreme Court, 39 percent supported it and 18 percent were not sure.

"It's interesting that the state doesn't fit the overall conventional wisdom that this was a good pick by Obama," said president Dean Debnam in a statement.

Recent national polls have shown more voters thought Sotomayor was an excellent or good pick than a fair or poor one.

One reason for the split was that more Republicans opposed Sotomayor than Democrats favored her. Independents were mostly split.

The automated survey of 609 voters was conducted from May 28 to May 30. The margin of error is plus or minus four percentage points.

Re: Poll: N.C. split on Sotomayor

I'd like to subtract out the percentage of people who oppose EVERY choice by President Obama. If I guess 25%, the 43% becomes 18% in terms of reasonable opinions. Just saying

Re: Poll: N.C. split on Sotomayor

Liberals expect her experience as a "wise Latina woman" to allow her to make better decisions than a white guy.

Is that why liberals like Jesse Helms voted for Sotomayor already?

The racist attack thing is a gift from Jesus.

Keep 'em coming (Even though Gingrich has already apologized.)

Re: Poll: N.C. split on Sotomayor

Liberals expect her experience as a "wise Latina woman" to allow her to make better decisions than a white guy. However, Perto Ricans tend to be devout Catholics. How can they be sure that she will favor abortion "rights"? If they are going to play identity politics, they'd better make sure they've got the right identity. Maybe it'd be safer to pick a Jew or even better, an atheist. I'm not sure they can trust a Puerto Rican for this important job. Also, they might want to make sure that she is not a lesbian. It seems like a lesbian's life experience could make her less sympathetic to abortion. A non-religious, childless, heterosexual woman with brown skin (not black or olive colored) might be their best bet here.

Re: Poll: N.C. split on Sotomayor

It seems as though a majority of Burr's constituents do not agree with her confirmation and probably appreciate Burr's efforts...

No, it seems as though you don't know the definition of the word "majority."

Your math skills aside, I'm pretty sure I said Burr can posture all he wants, but dollars to donuts he will end up voting for confirmation anyway, merely angering his base.

And if he doesn't, that's really dangerous ground for an incumbent R that needs D and I votes to win in a state like NC, given the actual poll results.

Sotomayor’s problem is that Republicans in the state are more opposed to her confirmation than Democrats are in support of it. While 72% of Republicans are against it only 59% of Democrats favor it. Independents are pretty much split with 33% favoring confirmation and 37% opposed.

Besides, when the actual hearings hit fever pitch on local media (as opposed to just Fox News and Rush Limbaugh), the 18 percent undecideds will likely break her way. Non-hyper partisans currently have no reason to have ever heard of her at this point.

Re: Poll: N.C. split on Sotomayor

So for all the liberals out there - James, Gosh and SHarrison that were attacking Burr when he said that time was needed to review her record were completely off base.

It seems as though a majority of Burr's constituents do not agree with her confirmation and probably appreciate Burr's efforts...

Re: Poll: N.C. split on Sotomayor

It could be because 3 out of her 5 rulings that have been reviewed by the Supreme Court have been overturned. Just guessing though.

Re: Poll: N.C. split on Sotomayor

I would love to see the poll numbers for democrats that do not even know who Sotomayor is. They could probably only find 30% of democrats that had ever heard of her!

Re: Poll: N.C. split on Sotomayor

easily explained, she is Hispanic.........NC seems to suffer from severe Latinaphobia.
