An overwhelming majority of North Carolina voters support amending the state constitution to define marriage as being between a man and a woman, according to poll results released this week by the Civitas Institute.
The poll of 600 registered voters from Feb. 16-19 found that 76 percent support a constitutional amendment outlawing gay marriage, while 21 percent are opposed to such an amendment.
State law in North Carolina defines marriage as being between a man and a woman, but a measure being pushed in the state legislature calls for a constitutional amendment on the issue.

February 28, 2009 - 2:47pm — razor0397For Protzman to say he is not a secular progressive is laughable. He never can support his "ideas/positions" with facts. He just enjoys being an a**hole. He is NC's Bill Ayers.

February 27, 2009 - 5:36pm — tangozDo not worry Mr. D, James Protzman is that front man for MoveOn.org. You should see all of the ads that they spend money on supporting his site. Protzman proclaimed to me that he is NOT a secular-progressive. So why is he so much against this state amendment?

February 27, 2009 - 4:06pm — fxdelucaWhile we are the John William Pope Civitas Institute, I have never discussed the Marriage amendment with anyone named Pope. Sorry to pop the bubble on any conspiracy theory out there.
Oh and I happen to be the Executive Director of the Civitas Institute.

February 27, 2009 - 4:02pm — cornbreadWhere's that double standard?
I haven't seen Skip Stam waving around PPP's poll with over 70% supporting the anti-bullying bill or PPP's poll with over 50% of Republicans supporting the comprehensive sex-ed bill.
By the by, did Civitas poll on how much people are willing to part with their taxes for the does-nothing-to-stop-divorce amendment?
A statewide referendum doesn't come cheap.
I would've thought Dallas and Fran wouldn't want to spend a few million to ban something that is already illegal. Then again, I think logically.

Re: Poll: N.C. for amendment
February 27, 2009 - 3:00pm — lpetrouProblem is is that while a majority of North Carolinians support this measure, the Democrats in the Legislature will not allow it to come to a vote -- they do not want to go on record for it and infuriate their gay constituents nor do they want to go on record against it and infuriate the vast majority of their constituents. Unless overwhelming pressure is put on them they will never bring it up for a vote.
Thank you

Great screen name!
Re: Poll: N.C. for amendment on gay marriage
February 27, 2009 - 1:05pm — periphrazeinImagine that. A poll conducted by a Pope-funded group generates results backing a Pope-supported position. Whatever will they think of next?
