Neither of the Democrats hoping to knock off U.S. Sen. Elizabeth Dole is catching fire with voters, according to the latest poll numbers.
In a Feb. 18 survey of 686 likely general election voters, Public Policy Polling looked at match-ups between Dole, a Salisbury Republican, and Democratic candidates Kay Hagan and Jim Neal.
Dole led Hagan, a state senator from Greensboro, 50-33. Dole led Neal, a Chapel Hill businessman, 50-29. The margin of error was plus or minus 3.7 percentage points.
Dean Debnam, president of PPP, said Dole's approval rating of 43 percent indicates some vulnerability for the first-term senator. But he said the numbers don't indicate the Democrats are positioned to take advantage of it.
"Hagan and Neal will need to be more aggressive to convince those folks who are leery of (Dole) that either of them is a better option," Debnam said.
