The Eagle Forum, conservative policy organization founded by Phyllis Schafly, has endorsed Dan Forest in the GOP primary for lieutenant governor.
The group also endorsed Republican gubernatorial nominee Pat McCrory.
“Dan respects the sanctity of human life and is a former chairman of the board of Wake Forest Pregnancy Support Services,” wrote Schlafly, one of the founders of the Religious Right in the early 1980's and ally of the late Sen. Jesse Helms.
“He is committed to empowering parents to choose schools they believe will best serve their children, to cutting taxes and regulations to help small businesses and, especially important after the disappointing Supreme Court decision, he is committed to opting North Carolina out of Obamacare.''
Forest, a Raleigh architect who is a favorite of social conservatives, is in a runoff with Wake County commissioner Tony Gurley.
Schlafly was more muted in praise of McCrory.
“McCrory has been consistently elected by the people of Charlotte to serve as their at-large City Council representative and as mayor,” she wrote. “Our Eagle Forum activists have worked with McCrory and trust him as a pro-family, fiscally responsible public servant who will lead the state back in the right direction.''
