The changing of the guard in Raleigh will mean a number of personnel shifts in state government. One began before the election.
Bill Holmes left House Democratic leader Joe Hackney's office Nov. 1 for a new post as spokesman for State Auditor Beth Wood. The auditor's office current spokesman Dennis Patterson, a 12-year state employee veteran, is retiring at the end of the year. Patterson and Holmes are former Associated Press reporters.
Hackney, a former House Speaker, did not seek re-election. The new House minority leader will pick a new spokesman to help direct caucus communications. Holmes will still be a frequent presence at the statehouse. In his role at the auditor's office, he will also monitor legislative affairs.
Republicans big wins in last weeks election will lead a number of Democrats to scramble to new spots in coming weeks. Democrats retained a majority of council of state posts -- Wood among them.
