Perdue wants 1-cent sales tax hike

Gov. Beverly Perdue told legislative leaders Tuesday she wants a 1-cent sales tax increase and a total tax hike package of $1.6 billion to balance the budget.

Perdue, a Democrat, met with lawmakers at the Executive Mansion and gave them a list of tax and other revenue options that she would like to see passed. It was an effort to help break the impasse between Democratic Senate and House leaders over what taxes to increase and how much.

Highlights of Perdue's wishlist, provided to Dome, include: an "emergency" 1-cent increase in the sales tax that would expire in October 2010, an emergency income tax surcharge on single taxpayers who earn more than $500,000 and married couples filing jointly making more than $1 million.

Perdue wants a 50-cent-per-pack increase in cigarette taxes, down from the $1-per-pack she requested in March, plus 2-cents-per-can more on beer and a 2 percent increase on alcohol.

The list included several tax increases that would take effect in the fall of next year, including taxes on some services (warranties, installations, repairs) and a tax increase on "luxury services" such as cosmetic surgery, limousines and chartered flights.

Update: Perdue released her letter and tax proposal.

Re: Perdue wants 1-cent sales tax hike

Perhaps the N&O should expand and start a dunce hat company and talk to ole Bev about providing some tax incentives to help out!

Re: Perdue wants 1-cent sales tax hike

We have been fresh out of our supply of dunce hats, but I'm told they will arrive soon. Thanks for the good words. Ryan left big shoes to fill. --Ben

Re: Perdue wants 1-cent sales tax hike

Thanks - just saying Ryan would have straight called them out and made them sit in the corner with a dunce hat on for five minutes...

P.S. I think yall are doing a good job of picking up where Ryan left off...I know I do not make your job any easier!

CO, My comment was aimed in the general direction of weeksgrove.

Re: Perdue wants 1-cent sales tax hike

Thank you Obama supporters and Democrats who voted straight party Democrat and got people like this elected instead of Pat McCrory.

To all those complaining about tax hikes...

Shut up.

Everyone else on this thread is venting and there is a utopic state on this board to vent and this single poster makes this comment, so please do not punish the rest of us, because he can only be hateful instead of factual!

Re: Perdue wants 1-cent sales tax hike

tell you what, hoss. You pay this one and the next one and the one after that, and the only change you're gonna get is what you have left in your pocket after these rapacious (look it up) politicians get finished with their "Change you can believe in" agenda

Re: Perdue wants 1-cent sales tax hike

We have our own (female) Al Franken here in NC...take a bow, Bev!

She must be a comedian, with that comedic bit about a "temporary tax"

har har de har. It ain't funny Bev and we aren't buying it. Cut the spending!!!!!!!!!!

Re: Perdue wants 1-cent sales tax hike

I recognize this is a contentious and emotional issue. Please keep this debate civil. Thank you. — BN

Re: Perdue wants 1-cent sales tax hike

What ever happened to common sense? When I do not have money to throw away, I do not steal from my neighbors, I stop spending what I don't have. Why is this so hard to understand ? Get outta my pockets!

Re: Perdue wants 1-cent sales tax hike

I see a lot of people talking about Perdue being a "one-term" governor. I wonder if they mean it? Remember, it's not just about Perdue. Voters in this state need to consider sending some legislative incumbents home also. I have said many times the only way this state will see real change in Raleigh is if the powerbrokers (Tony Rand, Marc Basnight, R.C. Soles, just to name a few) are sent packing. We have to return to some semblance of a "Citizen Legislature" and it can be done. The voters have to be reminded of what's going on, they can't be allowed to forget. And if the economy picks up in six months to a year from now, DON'T GET AMNESIA!!!!!!!!!!

Term limits begin at the ballot box!

Re: Perdue wants 1-cent sales tax hike

Oh please; Purdue only wants that big sales tax increase to keep from putting more precious little snowflakes in each classroom. It's too much a hit right when everyone's struggling to make ends meet, and as others have said, a sales tax increase hits the poor the hardest. The legislature needs to say "sorry dear, not right now" and pass a budget with some minimal tax increases but lots of cuts, then dare her to veto it.

Paging BlueNC and Gosh

It is funny that none of the liberal disciples are sticking up for ole Bev...

Perhaps liberalism isn't all it is cut out to be...and you can not defend it when you have such a great party leader in Gov. Perdue...

Re: Perdue wants 1-cent sales tax hike

The state can only make up for the deficit through either spending less (cutting public programs and services) or making more (raising taxes). Or it can (and most likely will) take the middle ground and combine cost cutting and tax increases. Like it or not better to prepare yourself for increased taxes. If you smoke then this is probably a good time to quit. If you buy a lot of goods and services that are not needed then maybe this is a good time to cut back. If you enjoy your beer a little too much then maybe this is a good time to stretch that six pack another day. The only way legislatures will get the clue that increased taxes don't work is by the consumers spending less when taxes are raised. You think a call or letter to your representative will make a difference? Sorry, our collective memory is a short one and we are too quick to forgive and forget so the threat to vote for someone else next election will fall on deaf ears. The only thing to be done that will have a definite effect is to take control of our wallets and spend less where taxes are raised.

...And Taketh Away

The rest of the jobs in North Carolina.

What is she doing? Aiming for 20% unemployment?

The Taxwoman Cometh

Has she figured out how to tax donations to churches and charities yet?

Re: Perdue wants 1-cent sales tax hike

Interesting how democrats quickly blame everything on Bush. I have yet to see any turnaround under Obama and in this state I see a drastic turn downward and we have had a democratic governor for years.

So why is it Obama supporters are able to push the economic downturn on Bush since it began during his tenure, yet Bush supporter are unable to push 9/11 back on Clinton when it is clear that is were the failures began. Yes, this recession is far worse than when Bush took office but remember he inherited a recession that began on Clinton's clock. Amazing how quickly democrats forget overall history.

Did I see a RAT post down there? I believe I did. Still got that bile aboiling I see. FWIW, I do miss your comments.

Re: Perdue wants 1-cent sales tax hike

Will Gov. Perdue also raise the admission prices at Chimney Rock Park & Grandfather Mt. Of course, she must raise taxes. You cannot lay-off enough teachers to pay for these huge liabilities that she purchased.

Re: Perdue wants 1-cent sales tax hike

ONE TERM BEV, you gotta love that comment.

CHANGE IS COMING WE CAN BELEIVE IN,,,,IN 3 YEARS...

Re: Perdue wants 1-cent sales tax hike

What if God is Jewish?

Re: Perdue wants 1-cent sales tax hike

Does she still want to apply the Franchise Tax to LLCs?

Re: Perdue wants 1-cent sales tax hike

She has got to be kidding - is this a joke???

One Term Bev

I think this Tax Hike just reinforces the buyers-remorse North Carolina voters are feeling across the state.

Re: Perdue wants 1-cent sales tax hike

Looks like Bev has added another $100 million in new taxes since the last time she deigned to communicate a detailed proposal to the General Assembly.

Instead of enacting "emergency" tax increases in the amount of $1.6 billion, I would like to suggest an "emergency" constitutional amendment permitting an immediate recall election for the office of governor.

Re: Perdue wants 1-cent sales tax hike

Cut Global Transpark support, take her salary, get all the money you can get from the Easleys - don't forget the Mary Easley funding (that they have made on the backs of honest hardworking North Carolinians)!

Re: Perdue wants 1-cent sales tax hike

This is so stupid! This administration has waste all this time coming to the point that even a blind squire could have found. Why don't we fire all the state employees we don't need, raise the sale tax by 2 cents and pay teachers, fireman, policeman etc more........... and move on! I really feel bad I vote for this mess. We need to see some real smart moves by this governor quick or she is only getting 1 term from me!!!!!! My real fear is, Governor Perdue is in over her head? I know she must be smarter than me, I saw the answer a long time ago! Cut spending and raise taxes for awhile to balance the budget, and don't go over the budget again. It's what I do in my home! I have a second job for a while! It's what most people do in hard times!

Re: Perdue wants 1-cent sales tax hike

This is so predictable. While everyone else suffers during a recession, our state leaders pretend the only "tough choice" to make is to decide which taxes to raise the most. As usual, the poor will suffer the most by those who get elected professing the care the most for them.

Re: Perdue wants 1-cent sales tax hike

You have to be kidding - what tax increase has ever been temporary. This Gov. will be gone in 1 term but her mess and the mess of the last few Govs. will still linger. Sorry to say, but cuts need to be made to balance, not raise taxes further or tax servies as noted in the press. These will all be business killers and if not killers will only move jobs out of State - go for it Bev - put your mark on History - one of failure!

Re: Perdue wants 1-cent sales tax hike

Remember that the global economic meltdown was caused by George W. Bush and the Repugs - so don't forget to thank the Repugs for every addition penny of taxes you need to pay to make up for revenue shortfalls.

Re: Perdue wants 1-cent sales tax hike

If there is a Christian God in Heaven, Pat McCrory, you will run again in 2012...

Re: Perdue wants 1-cent sales tax hike

Keep on, Bevvie. Let's see how far you can break the back of the state. I bet your legacy as governor will be that of the most disastrous to ever live in the Raleigh mansion. I won't likely see another woman in the role in my lifetime.

Re: Perdue wants 1-cent sales tax hike

What new tax has ever "expired"? This is BS.
