Perdue vetoes voter ID bill

Gov. Bev Perdue vetoed the voter identification bill this afternoon, her eighth veto stamp of the session. She issued a statement on HB351 soon after:

“The right to choose our leaders is among the most precious freedoms we have – both as Americans and North Carolinians. North Carolinians who are eligible to vote have a constitutionally guaranteed right to cast their ballots, and no one should put up obstacles to citizens exercising that right.

“We must always be vigilant in protecting the integrity of our elections. But requiring every voter to present a government-issued photo ID is not the way to do it.  This bill, as written, will unnecessarily and unfairly disenfranchise many eligible and legitimate voters.  The legislature should pass a less extreme bill that allows for other forms of identification, such as those permitted under federal law."

Senate President Pro Tempore Phil Berger reacted with this statement:

“We shouldn’t be surprised by how far the governor will go to score political points with the liberal wing of her party. A measure that ensures voters are who they say they are is a no-brainer, and most North Carolinians agree. It’s a shame Gov. Perdue is playing politics with the integrity of elections.”

The House does not appear to have the votes to override this veto, as it did on the budget bill. It passed the House on June 9 by a vote of 66-48, and in a final concurrence vote on June 15 by 62-51. If all members of the House are present for a vote, 72 is the magic number for an override. Three-fifths of those present and voting is required to override a veto.

The measure would require voters to show a driver's license or other photo identification or get a new voter ID from their board of elections.

House Speaker Thom Tillis issued this statement:

“Governor Perdue’s latest veto is the clearest example yet that she is out of touch with North Carolinians.  An overwhelming majority of our citizens have continued to support this bill, knowing that it would provide confidence in voting and protect against potential voter fraud.  It would have done nothing to discourage or prevent voting by those who have a right to do so.  Governor Perdue has put the interests of fringe elements of her political party above the wishes of the majority of North Carolinians.”

North Carolina Democratic Party Chairman David Parker has weighed in:

“The only thing stopping the Republican legislature from fully repealing the 20th century is Governor Perdue. If the voter ID bill became law, thousands of our fellow North Carolinians would be turned away from the polls."

Reaction continues with a statement from the N.C. Center for Voter Education:

"We commend Gov. Perdue for vetoing this ill-conceived photo ID requirement," said Damon Circosta, executive director. "This measure would have placed undue burdens on law-abiding citizens, making it harder for thousands of qualified voters to cast a ballot, without making our election system any more secure."

Senate Democratic Leader Martin Nesbitt:

"Voter ID is nothing more than a costly solution in search of a problem that forces thousands of seniors, minorities and students to nagivate an obstacle course of bureaucracy before being allowed to vote."

And from N.C. Republican Party Chairman Robin Hayes:

“When given a chance to boost voter confidence, Governor Perdue again chose to appease her liberal base to boost her floundering re-election campaign while ignoring an overwhelming majority of North Carolinians who supported this common-sense bill.  Governor Perdue’s veto is not surprising and as unemployment in North Carolina remains at 9.7% for the third straight month, it is clear ‘The Jobs Governor’ is only concerned with one job, her own.”

And likely GOP gubernatorial candidate and former Charlotte mayor Pat McCrory weighed in:

"Fair and honest elections are the bedrock of our representative form of government.  The right to vote is sacred and must be carefully protected.  But, creating a system where people can easily cast illegal ballots negates the rights of honest voters and erodes our basic freedom.  Today, Governor Perdue has decided to veto legislation that protects the integrity of the ballot by requiring voters be identified before they vote.  In choosing to veto the Voter ID Bill, Governor Perdue issued a statement saying legislation insuring the identity of voters is 'extreme.'  She has obviously adopted a political strategy of labeling extreme the duly elected General Assembly whenever she disagrees with them.  In this case she also labeled three quarters of the citizens of North Carolina who agree with voter identification as extreme."

Bravo for Bev Perdue!

Voting is a right, and every registered voter has the right to vote.  All registered voters must provide proof of their residence - AT THE TIME OF REGISTRATION.  The Voter ID bill is just one more attempt by Republicans to prevent people from voting.  In 2000 and 2004, Republicans stopped the counting of votes in Florida and rigged the vote in Ohio.  Now, they want to stop hundreds of thousands of people from voting.  They are turning the clock back to the 18th century when only the landed gentry could vote in what was then called a "democracy."  The Republicans are afraid of free and open elections, because they will lead to a free and open society.  Bravo for Bev Perdue and Bravo for David Parker!

NO, just smarter now...more enlightened...

about the EVIL ways of the criminal NCDP and their supporters!

(this was in answer to cato08 down below)  the political parties are evil controllers.

Get ready for the flood of ACORN voters...

Veto Bev would not be sitting in the governors seat without the help of ACORN voters in 2008.  She knows there is no chance for her without them so North Carolina had better get ready.  Minnie & Mickey Mouse will be voting again!

She's a cheater

Her actions are bewildering to me. This is a great policy that would require folks to prove they are who they claim to be before participating in this greatly important act of Americanism. When one person commits voter fraud, the entire system and premise of voting is undermined. The actions that this legislation set forth would not burden voters. If one already has an ID (nearly all of the voting-eligible population), then nothing would need to be done. However, if a voter does not, he would simply have to get the identification from one of several local government agencies. Voting is important enough for these few people to do so. If they can make it to the polls, they can make it to the DMV or BOE. Also, the current legislation would make it easier for disabled folks to get absentee ballots and cast their votes that way.

The Governor is making absurd assumptions about race and disenfranchisement. Don't be senseless and make this a race issue when clearly minorities should be no more affected by this bill than any other person, group, sect, etc. As for previously stated assumptions that voter fraud is nearly nonexistent, I ask this simple question: Do the cops catch every speeder on the road or every criminal that breaks the law? Certainly not, and no one would deny that many more get away than are caught.

Keep Vetoing, Bev!

Keep vetoing, Bev. You're widening your hate base.

Pray tell me  how requiring an ID is going to prevent a lawful voter from voting. This is pure nonsense. And, it's too simple to get an ID — even if the Board of Election has to issue them.

does anyone have the scoop

still wondering about Guv Dumplin' and her trip to some field to meet the HP for a roll in hte hay... of course I heard this many years ago... so she wasn't a politico back then.... but she was still a ________

ID to buy beer but not to vote

Wonder why a democrat is against getting rid of illegal non-registered voters? I don't wonder.... I know... get elected by those not registered or illegal and of course you want them voting...

stop it !

It's hard to make a case for not having a voter ID card, and if your position is to not have one, that mean you are on the wrong side of common sense. Remember, 99% of voter fraud are commited by democratic "machines". Where did the phase "vote early and vote often" come from. The ID is needed to keep the democrats in line because they will cheat every chance they get, it's in their DNA and they can't help theirselves.

Governor s veto.

The resason they do not find voter fraud is because no I D is needed. many states do require i.d. today.. As for the President he is doing a very good job of derailing himself.

Of course they have to

Of course they have to override her veto. But more importantly is for the states to sue over the voting rights act in order to clarify if the federal governmet has sole control over States rights..this nonsemse has been going for far to long. And the federal Government is way out of control..which the constitution does not reckonize.

Dumplin' only choice

Dumplin' is going to exploit her "base" for all its worth.  Who can blame her?  She is Governor totally because of Obama's coattails.  To do anything to at all diminish that voting bloc would be foolish for her.

I'm not voting for Dumplin' regardless so why appease me.

What a Joke

I would like to know what the stats are on illegal voting in NC.  That is a fact that has been left out of all the discussions.

All we have heard is it there.  But I have not seen any numbers to back up that there is rampant voter fraud in this state.  I think there is a rat in the barrel and he is dead and stinking.  Look what states these laws have been proposed in.  Most were state the Prez won in the last election and are ones that the GOP controls the legis. and Governor Man.  What better way to derail the Prez's re-election than get voters disinfranchised.  Some of us were born at night, but it was not last night.

Just wondering

how much this is gonna cost? Thought NC was broke? Keep on standing Governor

She will be voted out NEXT!

Sure don't ask for ID to vote, don't ask for ID to buy beer or cash a check or anything else. The ID is to keep the Dems honest, but then we know those too words don't go together!

Nut Case? I Say Not So

I haven't been denied voting because someone voted in my place but in my county there are dead people who have voted and people who haven't lived here for more than 20 years have been voting.  That could be stopped if Identification were required.

Veto Purdue

I am looking foreword to Bev Purdue getting Vetoed in the next election!

Wow

What nut case.  When you call yourself BitterExDemocrat, what are you now, some fool running around in a Ben Franklin suit?

The voter ID issue has been a waste of tax payer money, paying the idiot legislators for wasting time rather than address more pressing issues.

Have you ever been denied your voting privledge because someone else voted in your place?  Do you know someone who's been denied for the same reason?  I didn't think so.  This is simply a move to deny, or make more difficult, for legitimate voters to exercise their rights.

I agree. I guess we know who

I agree. I guess we know who is feeling a bit desperate as her career twilights. Well purdy, even with illegal votes, you won't get another term.

David Parker is a LIAR!!! Dont believe a word he says...

Bev is a bigger fool than we thought as 80+% of the CITIZENS FAVOR the

Voter ID requirement!

OUTLAW the NC democrat party, the criminal organization disguised as a political party!

they are NOT required by our Constitution.   Banish them as enemies of the state!
