Perdue regrets 'beer' quip

Beverly Perdue regrets making a joke about "beer and party money."

The candidate for the Democratic gubernatorial nomination told reporters at a water forum that she did not intend to downplay a proposed $200 tuition increase 15 years ago.

Laura Leslie has the scoop on her Hunter's Tavern blog:

Perdue also said she "deeply regrets" her 1993 quip equating a $200 tuition increase to "beer and party money" for college students. "I may have been thinking of my own son. He was at Carolina at the time... But it was unfair."

The quote has recently shown up in an attack ad from Perdue rival Richard Moore.

Perdue added that she didn't know the joke would be "thrown back" at her years later.

Update: According to the birthdates listed on this biography, Perdue's sons, Garrett and Emmett, would have been 16 and 13 in 1993.

Re: Opposition research

democrats LIE so routinely, its difficult for them to guard against it...

Re: Opposition research

Actually, the source of the info was me.

I wrote the profile of Perdue that included her kid's birthdates (precisely because this sort of thing comes up in campaigns).

All they did was send me (and Laura) a link to my own profile, which I should have checked when I wrote the post.

Opposition research

You didn't mention, as Laura Leslie did, that the source of the info on the kids was the Moore campaign.

Says Laura: Richard Moore's campaign emailed me to point out that Perdue's sons would have been 16 and 13 in 1993, so it may have been difficult for one of them to have been at Carolina at that time. (One hopes they weren't yet in need of beer money, either.)

The candidates are coming to BlueNC for a debate next Monday. I wonder how many people will want to ask why they spend so much time on crap like this.

Re: Perdue regrets 'beer' quip

That reminds me of a great headline from the Onion:

Hillary Clinton: "I would never have voted for the war had we known it would become unpopular."

Re: Perdue regrets 'beer' quip

Apologize for something meaningful Perdue...like all the CORRUPTION that emanates from your OPPRESSIVE 'party' in NC!!!
