Perdue: McCrory favors urban areas

Beverly Perdue argued that Pat McCrory would widen the urban-rural divide.

At the 2008 Rural Partners Forum at the North Raleigh Hilton this afternoon, the Democratic gubernatorial candidate targeted the Charlotte mayor over his past statements on rural and urban issues.

She cited a 2000 interview with McCrory by the Durham Herald-Sun in which he argued that state policy's on paving roads were encouraging sprawl.

"I want paved roads in my community — I don't know about you," Perdue said.

She also cited an episode of "Agenda Charlotte," a cable TV talk show that McCrory used to host, in which he said that rural interests had joined together to get state funding.

"I don't know about you, but I think that kind of divide-and-conquer mentality has no place in North Carolina," she said.

"If I'm elected governor, I intend to be governor of all of North Carolina," she said.

McCrory is slated to speak to the forum on Friday.

Update: "The Lt. Governor is proving that a negative campaign about nothing will lose to a positive campaign about issues every time," said McCrory spokesman Richard Hudson.

Re: Perdue: McCrory favors urban areas

From the looks of these comments everyone is catching on to "Bev"s negative game. They always try to play us agaist each other, just to further their agenda. Sorry "Bev" I think our eyes have opened!!!!!!

Re: Perdue: McCrory favors urban areas

The secret is out! And after we down easterners have kept it quiet all this time. We have always used it as a campaign tool by saying that no politician cares about us who live east of I95.

You always treat us like poor relations. The only thing you ever did for us was to give us the Global Transpark but you failed to tell us how to run it. And you didn’t give us no airplanes to park out there. The rich folk in the west always throw off on us down east. The only thing you ever do is stop by for a tank of gas on the way to the beach. And then you tried to keep us from hauling those monster boats up and down our narrow roads, many of which were paved during the Civil War.

All we ever wanted was to be recognized as part of this great state of ours. We’re the ones who need a bailout. Give us cablevision and Starbucks and Joseph A. Banks and soft serve ice cream. And another governor, of course.

Concerned: like it or not, urban v. rural plays well in this state. East v. Charlotte works even better. These themes have worked for hundreds of years, so they're not likely to go away now.

Just how rural is it in the gated community in Chapel Hill where she lives?

Re: Perdue: McCrory favors urban areas

Another poll out with Bev losing, another day her campaign pulls out a decade old quote to go negative with. Desperation is in the air.

Bev's Divide & Conquer mentality

Excuse me, but who is encouraging the divide & conquer mentality? Sounds like you are trying to pit the rural interests against the urban ones. I believe that the Mayor is the only candidate that is emphasizing one positive message across the entire state focused on solving our many problems.

Also, is there any more room to build new bridges or roads close to property that you own in New Bern?

When are you going to focus on what you are going to do for the entire state instead of continuing your negative fixation on the Mayor?
