Pearce: All politics (should be) local

Gary pearceGary Pearce says Beverly Perdue should stick to local folks.

In a post on Talking About Politics, the longtime Democratic strategist advises the governor-elect to avoid a rumored "nationwide search" for the secretary of Health and Human Services.

He notes that Gov. Jim Hunt went national for his picks for prisons and community colleges, but neither understood North Carolina politics and both were eventually replaced.

"Perdue may be feeling the heat because she hasn’t made any appointments yet," he writes. "This is the midway point between her election and her inauguration. Soon enough — say, next week — the press will start questioning her pace."

Regardless, he says she should take her time and avoid "national experts."

"There's a place for out-of-state experts," he writes. "Just not in the Secretary’s chair."
