Pay after the pump

Sen. Steve Goss racked up $19,000 worth of mileage on his car over three years, but his campaign paid him for it over the course of four months.

That’s not how campaign finance is supposed to work, according to State Board of Elections officials.

Goss, a Democrat from Boone, received three payments for mileage between October of last year and January of this year that totaled about $19,000. At the current federal reimbursement rate of 55 cents a mile, that’s about 35,000 miles.

-----

Goss said this week that during his first campaign, in 2006, he didn’t want to deplete his campaign account by paying mileage.

“That goes all the way back to 2006, when I started this,” Goss said. “I never had enough money to pay myself travel.”

Instead, he kept a log of the mileage, including driving around his district on official business after he was elected. By late last year, when he ran for re-election, that mileage had added up.

In October 2008, Goss paid himself $4,000 in campaign money for mileage and another $5,800 in November. He paid himself another $9,000 in January of this year.

State elections officials, however, said mileage should be paid during the reporting period in which it is accrued. Candidates file quarterly reports during election years and semi-annually in non-election years. Goss could have recorded the mileage in each report as a loan to his campaign and then paid himself after building up enough in the campaign account, said Gary Bartlett, the elections board’s executive director. Bartlett said Goss will have to amend his reports to correct the information.

Fee Fie Faux Fum

My Brother AppHawk, do not be in despair.

Verily, verily I say unto you : If Gigglebox is for us, who can be against us? Who can be our foe, if Gigglebox is on our side?

Re: Your faux-outrage is absurd.

Thank you.

I've never before posted on here (had to create an account just to do this), but I can't sit idly by while you attack such a good man while you sit idly by and let someone say "democrakkk" on a daily basis.

Posters here are precious aren't they?

Your faux-outrage is absurd.

Folks, either you don't want your Senator to show up in your community or you are completely to oblivious of life in North Carolina outside of Raleigh. I'm going with option #2.

I'm not sure if any of you have ever been to or lived in that district, but I have had the pleasure of that and knowing Steve Goss. He is squeaky clean and one of the best senators in office. You don't win as a Democrat in that district without being readily accessible to your constituents, whether they be in Ronda or Sugar Grove; Bethlehem or Pond Mountain.

The district stretches nearly 100 miles east-to-west. On top of that, it's not full of 8-lane urban highways like you folks have in Cary. It's windy mountain roads. Going five miles might take ten. But, Steve Goss does it constantly - everyday zipping across his four county district. Steve's constituents seem to like this - he was far and away the highest vote-getter in Ashe County and the highest Democrat in Wilkes (no small feat if you actually knew anything about North Carolina). During his first term, he received high accolades from the nearly all-Republican Alexander County Commission.

Goss = Harrell or Goss > Harrell?

Seems that the grand total of Ty Harrell's questionable expenditures for personal benefit amounts to a little less than $5,000. Goss's questionable expenditures for personal benefit? $20,000.

Basnight ought to do like Hackney did with Harrell and get Goss to resign.

However, given Basnight's unwavering support of RC "The Gun-slinging Good Samaritan" Soles, Julia "I don't pay my taxes" Boseman and David "Owning 300 acres at the interchange didn't influence my vote on that road" Hoyle, I doubt it will happen.

But we can still hope!

Re: Pay after the pump

Gigglebox so you changed your name from Gosh. Tired of the pun? Get over your fixation with fmr. President Bush.

But he was so good at heading your party. Just like Palin would have been.

How about you get over being a loser, loser?

Re: Pay after the pump

This man did nothing wrong. He is a Democrat after all. If he were a Republican I would say prosecute him. But since he is a Democrat he was only doing the Lord's work. The right wingers sometimes use gasoline additives and never get their injectors cleaned.

Re: Pay after the pump

"A Baptist Minister cheating the good people of North Carolina - Appalling!"

I think you're a little confused, Southern Rock. If anybody's being cheated, and I think it's a stretch to say they are, it would be people who have voluntarily donated to Goss's campaign fund more recently with the idea that their donation would go toward future campaign needs, as opposed to paying for past mileage.

He's moving money from one of his pockets to the other, not taking money from your pocket.

Re: Pay after the pump

You gots to follow the rules, and hopefully Senator Goss can square this with the SBOE. But I have a hunch this controversy is related to his support for wind energy in the mountains. Opponents of wind turbines, including some well-known stink-tankers, have been attacking proponents of wind energy and Steve Goss in particular recently, and it wouldn't surprise me to find out somebody did some nudging on this.

Re: Pay after the pump

Gigglebox so you changed your name from Gosh. Tired of the pun? Get over your fixation with fmr. President Bush. In case you have not heard, he is no longer president of the United States. For you to say "Have you seen the video of Bush holding hands and making out with that Arab guy?" and not mention our current President, Obama, and his bowing to an Arab leader just goes to show your bias. Get a life. State Senator Goss is just following in the footsteps of the dems. in Raleigh. I have said and will continue to say loudly, when we have one party in control for a long time that party tends to become corrupt. It has happened to Republicans and to Democracts, it is not a party specific idiom. The Democrats have controlled this state since the Reconstruction. In all those years there have only been two Republican Governors so of course corruption is running wild in this state and will continue to do so until the Republicans get in and clean it out in all the departments and bureaus and agencies, etc. In most states party control switches back and forth every several years. That is not the case here in NC. As a result we have people like Goss who think the rules don't apply to them and for the most part they are correct.

Re: Pay after the pump

Campaign finance laws should be abided by and the State Board needs to enforce Senator Goss's mistake to the fullest. He knew the rules and there is no excuse for what he did.

Times are hard at the gas pumps, but Senator Goss should have curbed some of his traveling if this is an accurate report about travel expense. The State Board of Elections is right on target with raising an eyebrow and needs to further investigate this matter.

Re: Driving Republican Talking Points

Dude, gas is expensive. Have you seen the video of Bush holding hands and making out with that Arab guy?

I'm all for documentation too, but I'm not for nailing anyone to the Cross for screwing the IRS.

Ty Harrell screwed constituents. I will burn him, but this Goss guy, the jury is still out. I just know the FEC sucks and is insanely hard to comply with, so... not a news story until this Goss guy buries a hooker in the desert and I get to film it.

Which I so would.

Driving Senator Goss

Let me get this straight.

Senator Steve Goss claims to have driven the equivalent of one and half times around the world on campaign related business in the last 3 years?

I'd like to see some documentation of that. Looks like a way for him to pad his pockets with campaign money to me.

Has any other state legislator claimed anything remotely close to that?

Re: Pay after the pump

This one time, at band camp...

I fail to see the N&O fascination with clerical errors.

You reporters know gas is expensive, right? And campaigns are hard? Sometimes you buy ads instead of paying your gas bill? I so don't get this due diligence.

I certainly hope there's not a plastic bottle in your trash bin.
