Palin speaks in Asheville

Sarah Palin spoke in Asheville Sunday.

Kicking off a busy week of campaigning by both sides in North Carolina, the Republican vice presidential candidate made a pitch lower taxes and energy independence to a crowd of several thousand at the Asheville Civic Center.

"You have a choice between a politician who puts his faith in big government and a true leader, John McCain, who puts his faith in all of you," she said. "You have a choice between a politician who will spread your wealth around and John McCain who will spread opportunity and lower your taxes."

Palin wore jeans — after a week in which her upscale wardrobe was heavily criticized — and came onstage after country star Gretchen Wilson performed her song "Redneck Woman."

She criticized Democrat Barack Obama, saying he was overconfident and treating the election as a formality.

"Where I come from, you have to win the game before you start cutting down the nets," she said. (Char-O)
