Obama ties McCain to poor economy

Barack Obama linked John McCain to the troubled economy.

At a campaign stop in Raleigh Tuesday night, the Democratic presidential candidate argued that the middle class is struggling, that housing foreclosures are the highest since the Great Depression and that gas prices are too high.

"Raise your hands," Obama said. "How many people think you are better off than you were eight years ago?"

There was a chorus of boos from the 2,500 people at the Exposition Center at the N.C. State Fairgrounds.

The visit came as Obama is expected to announce his vice presidential choice. After returning from a vacation, he has sharpened his message, seeking to cast doubt on McCain's reputation as a maverick and linking the Republican to lobbyists and oil companies.

It was Obama's second post-primary stop in North Carolina. McCain has not yet visited since the May 6 primary. (N&O

Re: Obama ties McCain to poor economy

Read in my previous comment my list of some of the ways Republicans have failed the country since 1980. McCain will continue the Republican agenda. Obama gives us a cause for hope. The country needs change. Let us give Obama an opportunity.

Re: Obama ties McCain to poor economy

Last time i looked Bush was President and Mccain was not. Since both candidates are US Senators i guess I can blame them equally for our failed economy.

Re: Obama ties McCain to poor economy

Republicans have brought the economy down and caused high oil prices by:
* Increasing the National Debt from less than $1 trillion in 1980 to $9.6 trillion today by cutting taxes and squandering money by giving big tax breaks to corporations and oil companies. Trickle down does not work.
* Discouraging the alternative energy innovations that Jimmy Carter encouraged during the 1970s. If Republicans had continued to encourage the adoption of alternative energy we would not have an oil problem today.
* Failing to raise fuel mileage standards and encouraging the use of large gas guzzling vehicles.
* Encouraging the deregulation of financial institutions and legalizing interest rates over 30%, overriding state governments mandated interest rates that kept interest rates at fair levels.
* Starting an unprovoked $3 million war without waiting to confirm the WMD threat.
* Failing to slow, as promised, illegal immigration after the 1987 amnesty of 3 million illegal aliens. There are over twenty million illegal aliens in out country today, filling jobs that were previously done by legal citizens.

The data backs up Obama. Republican presidents have been terrible for the economy over the last century:
